I think fmcityslicker will be one of the best resources on this question. He'll probably chime in at some point.

You're in control of what you enlist for up until the moment you sign the paperwork and swear in. If you have a change of heart at meps and pick 19D thats on you. What's the worst your facing? A big mean frown and a lecture?

I highly advise you to pick some sort of MOS like 19D. I came into the Guard as prior USAF and in a time period when all I had to do was swear in and get uniforms and poof...straight to OCS. I was way behind the power curve. I knew NOTHING of small unit tactics, IMT's, or even acronyms.

My first time even firing an M4 was at my first drill with my current unit as a 2LT. I went off to IBOLC and was STILL behind the power curve in knowledge and although its supposed to be a basic course, there are no basics. There is no (or wasnt for me) a class on "this is what an IMT is" and "this is what flank is" etc. It was "Alright go clear that bunker" before anyone knew what we were doing. We all were behind the curve but I was FAR behind.

Bottom line. If you enlist 19D you'll know some of that stuff. You may or may not ever need it after OCS (you will in OCS), but if you dont ever need it, you'll learn what you need to know for your field.

If you enlist as something else and you dont learn it, you will always be behind the curve somewhat. You can be a quartermaster officer and learn what you need at BOLC if you know nothing of your job ahead of time. If you end up a Combat Arms officer and you didnt learn some basics ahead of time, you'll always feel behind the curve.

As a former 12B, 31B and now 25 series (255A), all the 25 series jobs are good but 25L (cable dog) is very limited. All you basically do is run computer cable. 31B is an awesome MOS and if it had its own warrant track (CID is not it); I would have remained. People end up hating "us" MPs because they did something wrong; did not get a break and now are upset because they got their feelings hurt.

If you do not already have a solid, civilian-side skill, I would suggest that you select an MOS that will give you some leverage in the civilian world. 19D does not accomplish that except better promotion opportunities and saying that you are HOOAH to the support MOSes.

25U is learning how to operate and support FM radios in our Army. Now what you learn at school and what you will do at your unit will depend. I have had 25Us that fill mostly 25B slots and are better at fixing computers that the 25Bs. Radios are not as grand as the use to be but the Army has a wide array of systems and antennas that connect to it. Many radios have IP-based connectivity and could use the internet for its transport. I like playing with the Harris radios.

You will learn alot about encryption devices such as ANCD and the new flavor SKL (simple key loader) device.

You are simply the radio-telephone operator (RTO).

That is a lot of what I've read online, that you basically become a jack-of-all-trades IT/coms guy and you deal with all areas of communications. It sounds interesting and I certainly hope I get to work with all different kinds of equipment.

But I don't hate them for that. I'm a law abiding citizen. My MOS has somewhat a rivalry with the MPs as the schools share the same post.
Its not just 12bs any 12 series doesnt get along with MPs One of my drill sgts told us we would hate mps because theyre the one pulling our drunk azzes out of the bars. He wasnt BS every year at AT the MPs are escorting us out of the NCO club or visiting our barracks because we make to much noise.

On a serious note I love being an engineer. Ive rolled with route clearance in Afghanistan and worked with Horz. and Vert. units. Join as a 12N or something you shouldnt have an issue reclassing to 12B. Their isnt to many people willing to hunt IEDS like 12B

if you are going to college, generally speaking, just having the military along with your degree will put you a solid step ahead of your fellow classmates. I am infantry, and graduated with a degree in intelligence, and was one of the first in my class to get a job in my field, simply because I had the added experience of 3 years and counting of military

My recruiter tells me that the war is dying down and that deployment is coming by less and less. After college I would like to be in Combat but not for now. I actually don't even know my major yet, I'm not sure about PoliSci. I want to be in intelligence when I'm older but my State doesn't have it.
Not until you contract (usually Junior or Senior year).
