  • Which MOS is the best choice?

So I'm enlisting in about 10 days and I am still iffy on which MOS to choose so I'm reaching out to you all for some help. I am 17 years old and I'll be going to Basic next summer. I am going to College while in the Nevada National Guard and also I'll be attending ROTC. The available MOS that I found and that I would do were:

    25U Signal Support Specialist
    25N Nodal Network Systems Operator
    25Q Multi-Channel Transitions Operator
    25L Cable Systems Installer
    31B Military Police
    19D Calvary Scout

I'm going into the Political Science field while in college so none of these really fit the bill but its what they got. So which ones do you guys think would benefit me?

If you're going to attend ROTC, it doesn't matter which MOS you choose. Provided you complete the program, you'll get a new job or AOC as an officer.

But, it's always good to have a contingency. Not everyone completes ROTC whether it be the program itself or college. In that case, don't choose a job that you don't want to do.

25U - A buddy of mine had this MOS...and absolutely hated it. He's out now and works at some IT company making crazy bank with the skills he learned.
31B - I am obligated to tell you as a 12B that MPs are the scum of the earth. But in all seriousness I hear they have alot of fun and have additional opportunities such as ERT or SWAT.
19D - Another buddy of mine is a Cav Scout and he thinks he's the absolute king of the world. He loves his job and wouldn't want to do anything else. Always saying something like "If you ain't cav..." I tune him out.

With all that being said, bear in mind that you're going to meet people all throughout the Army that both love and hate their MOS. I love being a Combat Engineer, but there's a guy I went to basic with that is counting the days until he can ETS. We're all different and different things appeal to us. All of the above jobs will benefit you, but some AIT is longer than others. Your 19D and 31B are probably the shorter ones of the bunch, so if getting back to school in time for the Semester is an issue, make sure you take that into account.

    Hope this helps.

I believe every officer should have some understanding of small unit tactics. Therefore, I highly recommend 19D. The other MOSes will only be helpful if you become an officer in the same CMF (career management field).

By the way, there's no reason your MOS should have any relevance to your major in college. I majored in mechanical engineering and there is not a single MOS that relates to this major (I don't think anyone solves partial differential equations in AIT). If anything, I like being in a branch that is totally unrelated to my civilian job and studies.

Edit: If I may ask, why PoliSci? That major is almost entirely useless on its own. Unless your intent is to go to law school, I would choose something more technical. Hell, even if you want to go to law school, I'd STILL choose something more technical. Lawyers with a technical specialty are always more employable than those without one.

My only worry is that I'll get deployed more likely than the other MOS's if I do 19D. Ill be in ROTC while I'm in so I know ill be undeployable but I don't wanna risk it. My recruiter tells me that the war is dying down and that deployment is coming by less and less. After college I would like to be in Combat but not for now. I actually don't even know my major yet, I'm not sure about PoliSci. I want to be in intelligence when I'm older but my State doesn't have it.

There's a very simple solution to all this. If you aren't ready for combat now, don't join the Army now.

I deployed to Iraq twice while I was an undergrad. The mentality of "I'm willing to deploy, but I want it scheduled around my own personal plans, and in the meantime I want to collect benefits" is totally unacceptable.

If you are choosing an MOS with the goal of avoiding a deployment, you are not only off to an incredibly weak start, but you are also clearly not officer material. Just imagine yourself, a freshly minted Second Lieutenant, talking to an E5 or E6 in your platoon with a CIB and two tours in Afghanistan who just recently finished his degree:

"So, sir, what made you decide to enlist as a commo specialist instead of combat arms?"
"Well, uh, I was going to be in combat arms, but I didn't really want to deploy as an enlisted soldier/student."

Yeah, that's a great first impression.

Well I do wanna do Combat but its not entirely my choice. I'm only 17 and my parents are for me joining just as long as I'm not in a Direct Combat MOS. But is their a possibility that I can switch after I'm 18?

It's possible, but that's also not entirely your decision. The needs of the Army will dictate your opportunities to reclass into a different MOS.

Can't help you on the "parents" front; I was 18 when I signed (I was an 88M but in hindsight I wished I had been in combat arms after becoming an Infantry officer). Maybe you could impress upon them the fact that even if they force you into choosing an MOS that you don't want, that you're going to do everything in your power to reclass into the one you DO want after you turn 18? Furthermore, if you see yourself trying to get a combat arms branch as an officer, the enlisted time in a combat arms MOS and being exposed to NCOs and officers experienced in small unit tactics will actually make you a more confident and capable officer who has a higher likelihood of keeping himself and his men alive in actual combat. So their unwillingness to let you choose 19D is, in a sense, placing you in more danger rather than less.

Well I dont go to BCT till next Summer so Ima be in RSP for awhile and being that not that many people join the Nevada Guard I feel I have a good chance. I head that Cav also have a less AIT time so I might be able to get back before the semester starts.

Why does anyone usually hate on police? They give you tickets and cause a big inconvenience!

But I don't hate them for that. I'm a law abiding citizen. My MOS has somewhat a rivalry with the MPs as the schools share the same post.

Is this short for "I'm going to?" You're quickly approaching adulthood; the way you speak and carry yourself WILL directly impact your future. Trust me.

Changing your MOS depends on the availability of slots, your state's level of funding, and your unit's willingness to let you go. Assume nothing.

Tell them you'd rather be an 88M. Jwarren can tell you all about being a professional target (88M) in his enlisted years.

Can you give me any information about 25U or ask your buddy? I ship out to BCT in October and AIT for 25U in January and have not been able to find any clear information about what you actually do as a 25U! There's lots of conflicting info concerning your unit's IT strength vs. commo strength that determines your actual duties. Any concrete information would be so helpful!
