I enlisted in the National Guard in June of this year. I start school (college) in a week, and I would like to know if I am able to get G.I. Bill benefits for the coming semester(s). I have not shipped to basic and I don't ship until May. I have/will be drilling in the RSP program until then. In my contract I did receive a kicker and I believe they told me I got the Montgomery GI Bill (1606) but I am not sure how it works. Do I have to have been deployed on 'active duty' in order to use the GI Bill? The way it was explained to me was that it was around 300-400 a month (plus my kicker) but if I ever get deployed, then it would jump up. Does this mean I can use it now? Before I have even been to basic? I did some research on the VA's website with GI Bill applications and they want me to put a discharge date, deploy date(s), etc. I am sure I may have done something wrong though. Any help is much appreciated. I just want to use as many educational benefits as possible as this is my last year of schooling.
