  • Use/Lose Leave Cashout and DA 4187

    Hi all,

I finished BCT back in November of 12, and while there the NG liason told us that the use/lose days on the LES would be automatically cashed out. After researching this on my own to get a timeframe, I gathered that it would take some time, but April was beginning to exceed even typical Army pace!

So, I called the pay hotline number on MyPay and they told me that I would have to do paperwork to get these days myself, or I will lose the 8.5 days I have in the category at the end of the fiscal year for $0. They told me to fill out a DA 4187. I'm trying to ease the burden on my admin NCO's by just bringing them the 4187 filled out and ready for a signature. I'm not sure what to put though. Specifically:

    1. What block do I check for Item 8 on Section III (I request the following action...)
    2. What do I put in for remarks? Just an explanation of the rest of the form and my general request?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It is not a burden. Take your LES to your leadership and have them help you in getting your money.

Chief, good advice. I didn't mean burden in the "my stuff isn't important" sense, though. Just in the I have a boatload of paperwork to get moving sense!

Short of it is, I'm an 09S who just started OCS, so I'm in the process of transitioning units, getting the pay grade bump to E-6, trying to sort thru an ETP packet I have to do because MEPS jacked up my SLRP, getting DTS for the past two drills, etc. I'm an admin's worst nightmare at this point! I'll see that it gets done, but as a leader in training, I want to do as much as I can to streamline things.

First of all, where are you located in relation to your unit? Are you at BCT/Accelerated/Home? Do you have a full-timer at your unit?

I ask because you probably can fax/scan-e-mail to and fro.

Also, you need to engage your leadership. As a Warrant, I still need to go through proper channels to submit a 4187. I type it and bring it to the company so they can vet it and place it in the routing slip. From there, it takes off.

Anyway, last year I have to submit a 4187 that should have went to my Company Commander. Then my LTC approached me and said that I could send it directly to him without using an addendum. Then I deployed so I could not go to my advance course until this year. Anyway, we get a new BC/LTC and I submit the 4187 the exact same way that I did for my previous BC. This one kicked it back because he wanted specific bullets and changes to it.

My point is, to clarify with your admin NCO to see if they have a template that they utilize for that specific 4187. Just because DFAS provides a template; does not mean that your unit will accept that format.

Get all your issues together into one folder and submit it to higher and track it. Request statuses and updates if time is taking too long. Sometimes paperwork gets lost. Some correspondence comes back quicker than others.

Also, some units I been in; if you were a Specialist or below; you had to arrive to the PAC/S1 with your NCO/team leader to deal with personnel actions.

I'm in state OCS, so at home, and there are full-timers in both the RSP unit I have been in and the OCS unit I'm being transferred to. I have a scanner and use it for the little things, but I think I need to follow your suggestion and put all this into one folder.

Thanks for the practical knowledge. I guess this is one situation where I ought to take the initiative to let others take the proper initiative on my behalf.

I have a good relationship with all the AGR's, technicians, and the CO of the old unit. It is no problem for me to speak with them directly. The OCS Regiment folks, however, this might apply to. I'm going to pursue this actively either way, but do you recommend going to them directly or trying to coordinate thru the student leadership channels? The obvious answer is "Chain of Command", but when student leadership changes constantly by design, does that really count for pay and benefit issues?

          Thanks for the detailed responses.

When you have two fathers; it is best to go to the one that can resolve the issue ASAP.
