  • Active Duty after the Guard

I am currently in the process of joining the National Guard and was wondering if I decided to go active duty afterwards would I have to go back through bct or could my mos carry over? I'm joining the guard as an MP if that matters.

If you are able to get a conditional release approved while under Guard contract or allowed to switch when your time is up and if the active Army will take prior service enlistees under a specific MOS is a lot to hope for. If you do not have a break in service for the allotted time that is in current policy (three years), then you will not require to go to BCT. Also, 31B will have to be available for prior service on the AD side and for your MOS level as well (e.g. E-1 through E-4, E-5, etc).

I switched from NG to AD in 2003 (still on AD) and 42A or 12B (my primary and secondary MOS at the time) were not available for me. I had to choose from MP, Tanker or ammo handler specialist to come back on active duty and I chose MP. MP jobs were being increased due to the wars. Your guess will be as good as mine in the near future. Just do well and stay out of trouble.
