Hello, I am currently 16 and will turn 17 in 1 month and I just have a few questions about the Guard after just receiving an informational packet by mail. When serving in the National Guard is their a way where you could not have to serve in active combat or war but help with medical services, or just when natural disasters occur you are their to help and maybe you just spend more hours doing that. I ask this because I do not want to serve through active duty but I do want to help and be in the National Guard but everyone I ask tell me different things when it comes to this issue of mine. Can you help me?

    Re: Active Duty

The National Guard serves the state first, and also the nation. Based on what you have described, you may be happier serving in the State Defense Force. If your state lacks one, perhaps the Red Cross would fit.
