  • Thinking of joining National Guard...confused

    Hey everyone,

I am soon to be graduating college with my bachelors, and am wanting to change jobs. I've always felt a bit of a desire to be in the ANG, but don't know if it would be right for me. Maybe some of your answers to my questions can help me out.

If there is a posting for a job on the site, for example, 42A Human Resources Specialist in my area, is that a full time position? I've seen a lot of things about part time on the website, which isn't something I am interested in. My financial goal is to find full time work that pays more than my current job, which is $9/hr.

Are you required to move around? I live in Orlando, FL, and I am not keen on leaving anytime soon. Also, are ANG members ever deployed to warzones, or do they primarily stay where they are working/in their state?

I know I may sound a bit na´ve...big thanks to anyone who answers!

Enlistment into the Army National Guard is in a part time status, typically one weekend per month and two weekends in the summer. You can apply for full time positions but it's far from a guarantee.

Are you required to move around?

You will be assigned to a unit as close as possible to your home and with the rare exception required to move to another unit/location.

Also, are ANG members ever deployed to warzones, or do they primarily stay where they are working/in their state?

Yes. If being deployed outside of the U.S. borders is a deal breaker, I would advise you to take your services elsewhere.

Chances are that is a drilling job (2 days/month). The National Guard does get deployed to combat zones, though with a 42A MOS, you probably won't see many firefights.

Honestly, if you are just looking for a job (not to be in the military), try USAJOBS.gov. There are a lot of listings for entry level work that start on the government "GS" pay scale, and end up paying you pretty well.
