    Hey Everybody,
I'm currently in my 3rd year out of a 5 year program where I will earn my BA/MS. After graduation, I plan on entering a career in law enforcement. I have a couple of questions. If I were to enlist, what rank would I go in as? Also I have gone back and forth between enlisting in the Guard or Army Reserves. I'd appreciate it if anybody could provide some insight on any distinct differences. I would also like to know if anybody on here has a law enforcement career and how they have handled both careers. I would like to go into infantry. Is this a MOS that is always in demand from a state? What are the promotional opportunities/possibilities in the Guard? And lastly, I've heard that infantry is OSUT. Is this a guarantee or does it depend on when one enlists? Thank you in advance for your help!

Sounds like you could use a one stop link for your basic enlistment questions. For that, I would recommend exploring the National Guard page a bit more. Here's a direct link to the section on Guard Basics. This will tell you what you can expect through the process.

As to your rank, having a degree can actually grant you a rank of Specialist (E4). If you enlist before you finish but have completed 42 semester credit hours in your degree, you can come in as an E3. Here's more information: Enlistment Rank and Promotions

Yes, Infantry is a OSUT. Like any MOS, the demand will depend on the State's mission and need, to put it generally.

Lastly, the main difference between Army Reserve and Army National Guard has to do with funding. NG falls under the direction of a states' Governor. Therefore, their mission is tied closely to the budget and mission of the state. The Reserves, conversely, are Federally funded. What this means for you is that there may be benefits the NG can offer, for example, that the Reserves won't. Both, however, are still Army. Make sense? I'm sure there's lots more that can be said about this, but that's the gist of it.
