  • Preparing for BCT and AIT

    Hello All!

My husband is set to leave for BCT (Army National Gaurd) on 9/11/12. He'll immediately go to AIT and he'll be gone approximately eight months. He is uncertain if he completed the neccessary paperwork to add the kid and I in DEERS in order to obtain healthcare coverage. It seems like Tricare will be less expensive than the insurance through our employers. Is there a way to confirm? Also, do you find it neccessary to obtain POA (power of attorney)? I guess I'm looking for guidance on what we should be doing to prepare for his upcoming departure. Thanks in advance for any direction!~Melissa

I would have him talk to his recruiter about info on comparing the insurance costs and making sure he has everything filled out. I've been working on the same thing since I leave in October for BCT and have a child at home. For the POA, the only real reason I could see needing it is if you guys were divorced. I signed special POA to my mom for when I am gone cause my daughter's mom and I have been split up for a few years and I want to have someone that can act on my behalf.

Thank you. His recruiter is a bit difficult to get ahold of. I'm meeting with a family assistance specialist tomorrow. Best of luck to you!

POA is not really necessary if he is just going away for BCT and AIT. Deployment is another matter. Also, POA shouldn't be given to spouses. At least in my personal observation it shouldn't.
