How does Individual Ready Reserve work? Say I want to join the ARNG for 3 or 6 years, and do the rest as IRR. Do I still drill? Do I get paid? Is this option open to all soldiers? (I am a JAG recruit)

    Re: Irr

The IRR is an inactive status. Basically you remain on a list and are really nothing more then a number or name unless you are involuntarily called upon or you volunteer yourself to come out. Those situations will become less and less relevant as the war continues to draw down. When you say you are a JAG recruit, are you a lawyer or are you enlisting as a 27D? Some of the stipulations are different for officers and enlisted, but in short no you don't drill, no you don't get paid for IRR time.

You can drill and be promoted in the IRR. It's just harder to do and takes a lot more work in your part.
