  • Death in the family during basic

Hello! My close friend is still in "red phase" (or near the end of it, according to the letter I received) and his grandfather died early Thursday morning. The family visitation is Monday night, and the funeral services are Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon. Those of us who are his closest friends wondered how long of a leave he would get -- his sister had thought he would return home on Friday, but some of us thought he might only get a day or two at the most, so he might not be allowed to return until Monday or Tuesday. Anyone have any idea how this works? He was very close to his grandfather as he was his custodial parent growing up so all of his friends here at home are naturally worried about him since we haven't been able to talk to him yet. We can tell he hasn't been on his phone. Thank you for your help and comments.

His family would have to notify the Red Cross with all of the Soldier's information along with information of the death. There's a good chance he will not get leave.

Getting recycled to another company is also a possibility. Meaning he might have to repeat training.
