View Full Version : What is the Shortest AIT?
RLO
March 10th, 2008, 12:39 PM
A friend of mine who's been in 15 years and I were discussing this - and don't get all excited I'm all enlisted with a MOS chosen, actually just got rid of split opt and am going straight through 92F - but what IS the shortest AIT?
Again, this is just for curiosity. Gotta live with this choice a lot longer than any training length anyway!

this is including basic with the OSUT, your husband will be at basic for 11 weeks on top of the 7 week AIT. Infantry OUST is 15 weeks total, MP OSUT is now 16 weeks. Remember a week was added to basic as well.

Infantry has no "real" AIT. Its just a really long basic with little difference between the beginning and the end.

Hey man. Im going 92F as well.
When do you leave? Are you goin to Fort Lee? I'm an aspiring pilot so all I cared about was that it was in the aviation battalian. I thought it'd be a pretty easy job while I concentrate on school.
It is the shortest other than infantry I believe...8 weeks I think?

why would you care about the shortest AIT? regardless you are just getting the basics. when you get to your unit, that is where the real training begins.

I ran into a problem when enlisting that the info my recruiter had about AIT length was different than what the computer brought up when they tried to find a ship date. My recruiter said 88M was 6 weeks, computer said 9 weeks. Recruiter said 42L was 5 weeks, computer said 8 weeks. 21K 5 weeks, actually 6 weeks. And so on... Goarmy.com showed all the same info that my recruiter had, but when we actually tried to fill out the contract for the MOS, everything was longer making it impossible to fit BCT/AIT into summer break (I'm contracting w/ ROTC right afterward anyhow so I won't actually be performing whatever MOS I enlisted with). It was a maddening process. Anyone know of a current document w/ actual AIT lengths?

exactly ski and remember troop, you might get hurt in AIT and have to get recycled or stay longer due to class delays. Happened to me back in Leonardwood in 83. I stood a total of 11 days in reception waiting to be picked up so I came home later than expected. pick a job that you want to do not based on the AIT length.

Roger that. I spent a glorious 11 days over MLK weekend in reception at the beautiful Fort Knox. Then they added a week to basic, 10 and a half weeks total. And Ait was actually a week shorter then my orders said.
Take into account that your training is based on the needs and desire of the army. Not on your individual issues.

Well, I want to be an officer, which requires a degree. And I can't exactly miss three weeks of school and expect to keep up my 3.5 GPA. I think it was clear from my statement that I will be picking a job I want to do when I commission and I won't be performing the job I train for at AIT. If not, I hope it is now. The reason I'm attending BCT/AIT instead of the Leader's Training Course is to receive the MGIB to help cover the costs of college that go above and beyond the limits of Tuition Assistance.

My recruiter is more than willing to work with me on this since the ARNG needs officers esp. in the branch I want (MP).

why not just go the rotc/smp route. wouldnt rotc offer you a good option upon entering MSIII?

Since you are trying to squeeze Basic and AIT into one summer here is what you do.
1. Go to all of your professors at the beginning of the spring semester. As in the first week. Tell them your plan, ask for an early final exam. (By early I mean only one week early). Most likely they have already got the exam filled out, they probably just rotate final exams making sure they don't give the same exact exam in the fall as in the spring.
Most likely if you expain your situation they will be sympathetic to a military man trying to serve his country and agree to your request. If not, wait until mid-term, you have been doing well in your classes, let's say you have all A's except one class, then after giving your prof one more chance, you should go up the chain to your Chairman of your department that you're having trouble with, explain, show your grades, you will almost certainly get help then.
Okay, that's one week early you have earned. Now let's talk about the beginning of the fall semester.
2. Same deal in reverse. You should have pre-registered in March or April, you may or may not know your professor's names. If you do, go to them, explain your situation, emphasize you may or may not be late coming back, ask for a reading list. You buy the books early have them shipped to your AIT, you read every night.
If you don't get professor's names, go to your department chair, same explanation, ask when professor's names will be released. When they do get released, you email prof., or department head, get reading list, have a buddy or parent mail to you all of the books so you can read, and not be behind.
When you get back, let's say you come in one week late. You report to school, to your prof's offices, in class A uniform, you take as much time as necessary to visit with every prof. to ask them questions, prove you have done the reading. They will be impressed, you will almost certainly be caught up.
Congrats, you just earned yourself two weeks extra to accomplish your goals!!

You don't understand this clearly. The army doesn't care about your recruiter, and what your recruiter wants for you. Ultimately what it comes down to is you are going to be one person in an army of close to 1,000,000. So if your training goes a little long, and you miss some school, there isnt much you can do but drive on. I spent an extra 2 weeks at fort knox all because the army wanted to experiment with training cycles.
Just choose a job you will be happy with, and if you take a semester off, no big deal, you will be better off for the training anyways. plus i got about 8 college credits just for going through initial active duty training. So i didnt completely miss out on a semester.

Ever consider doing split op? I don't know how hard it is for someone in college to get, but we had one guy at RSP who was in college and did it.

Split-op isn't a good option for him. He won't start getting his MGIB and Kicker until completion of IADT, and seems like he's wanting to contract the summer after he gets back.
I'm assuming you're about to the start you MSII year now? And you're wanting to be done with Basic/AIT, summer before you III year and tehn contract upon return in Aug? Anyways, I can help, contact me via PM with the particulars of your situation and I'll provide more input, or point you in the right direction.

I would seriously urge you to take a semester off to do your training. If you want to be an MP officer. Go to MP OSUT. The skills you would posses after training would be favorable to you when you are apply for your branch. I took a semester off to go through training, and wasnt very excited about the idea, but after going through everything, one semester off didn't **** me, plus if you have student loans you can write your loan companies to keep your loans in deferment. And i looked at my credits, it was actually 10 for all of my training, plus some extra for my combat lifesaver course.

I thought MP OSUT was 16 weeks or less? Yes or no? If it is, then refer to my previous post, I solved his problem for him.
From the first week of May to the end of August is approximately 17 weeks.
(4 more in May, 4 in June, 4.5 in July, 4.5 in August)
He can have his cake and eat it too, he just has to want the cake bad enough to work harder than his peers.
If the Army messes up the schedule more than a week so be it, he may or may not have to sit out a semester. Take a chance, go for it. He has nothing to lose.

Wait a second......... you mean to tell me that Basic and infantry ait can be done in a total of 15 weeks? So basically it's possible that next summer I could do this where I could do basic and infantry training all at once and still be able to do college in spring of 09 and go to train in the summer and then come back to start college in the fall of 2009?
