I just talked to my local Nat. Guard recruiter the other day. My original plans were to join at 17, go Split Ops, and pursue the 31B MOS. Turns out, according to my recruiter, that 31B is not available for Split Ops in the Guard, only OSUT. Now, he, being in a MLRS unit, is wanting me to consider going 13M, so i can do Split Ops, and then re classing whenever i want. Now, i have nothing against this unit or this MOS, but i just don't think i would be happy in what i seem to consider a "support" element. I'm thinking i would be able to better serve my country in a "trigger pulling" MOS. Not to mention, my birthday is in late May, so theres not even a guarantee that i can do Split Ops, even with 13M. He did tell me that if i wasn't able to go Split Ops for 13M, i could still join at 13 and Drill and draw Drill Pay until i was able to go to BCT and AIT. My question is, would i be able to join at 17, Drill and draw Drill Pay, but be signed up for the 31B MOS?

My thinking is that since there was no guarantee of getting Split Ops in the first place, i could just fore go joining as an MOS that i didn't originally want, and go straight for something i do want. Basically, can i still join at 17 even if i cant immediately go to BCT like i would be doing with Split Ops?

I hope that wasn't too long or confusing. Please ask me for clarification if it is needed. I will be talking with my recruiter again Tuesday, so i can get a final answer then. Also, if it means anything, i would be joining the Ky Nat. Guard.

Once you enlist, you are in service, and must attend drill (even if you have months before you ship to training). Those Recruit Sustainment Program drill weekends allow you to learn some basic skills so you'll do better when you ship to Basic & AIT (or OSUT).

I recommend that you make some sacrifices now in order to get the job you want. You'll be glad you did.
