I entered active duty in '84, just before the MGIB went into effect in '85. I remember being told at the time that I was not eligible for MGIB, even if I re-enlisted, because I was covered under VEAP (which I used for my undergrad). I'm now looking at joining the NG, and am interested in using MGIB-SR for grad school.
From what I've read, MGIB-SR is supposed to be a different bird. If I'm not eligible to receive MGIB because of my VEAP, does that also disqualify me from MGIB-SR?

This will get complicated. Review the VA's website (http://www.gibill.va.gov/GI_Bill_Info/benefits.htm#VEAP). Good luck with all that.

Thank you for the pointer.
For anyone else who may have this issue (as unlikely as that seems), this is what I've come up with -
The answer is "maybe".
The VA's response to these qualification queries is "submit an application and we'll make a determination; you'll know the answer when your claim is either approved or denied". For me, this is a dead end. In order to submit an application for MGIB-SR, one must first obtain an NOBE (Notice of Basic Eligibility) from your unit. In other words, I won't be able to start to get an answer until after I'm already attached to a NG unit.
Doesn't really matter to me, though. This is not any kind of deal maker/breaker; just a nice additional perk if I can get it. I just wish I lived in a state that gives tuition breaks to NG members.
