Does any one know the barrel length of the M16A2 rifles used during the marksmanship training and qualifying? Is it a 16" or 20" barrel. Also any clue on the distance that targets are shot at? Thanks.

hmmm, never thought about length of barrel
targets are (in meters)
25 meter zero
qualify (in random order)
50
100
150
200
250
300
40 rounds to qualify. 20 in prone supported (2 mins), 10 kneeling (1 min), 10 prone unsupported (1 min). Used to be 20/20 until they introduced the kneeling position.

Actually the order of the target pop ups aren't random at all. You can get online and search for the order of the pop ups. Our DS gave us the exact order of all 40, in all 3 positions. :) Remember, it's 50 Left the very first target!

You can always not shoot the 300's and save those rounds for an extra shot you missed on the short ones. They all count the same, but you can almost guarantee sharpshooter, if you can halfway shoot, just relax.

Qualification day was one of the greatest days of BCT. Our Company finished with 91% First time go's.

was a good day for us too, we got to finally put our acu covers on our kevlars. we were no longer turtle heads. when we were turtles, we would see other companies with covers and be like '**** they must have been through a lot' haha

This is what I do. I never go for the 300s and use the extras towards the others.
Keep an eye out for rounds that eject, but are still good. You can quickly shove them back in and fire. (Recommended for quals with your drilling unit as a DS might grill you for it)

Yeah that's the way it was with our company too. Most other companies around us had theirs from day 1 - we had to earn ours. :)

Actually it's Christmas Leave, I go back on 3 Jan. I'm ready to get training again.
I enjoy FLW - everyone told me how bad of a place it would be, how boring it was, etc. I've enjoyed it when we've had passes to go around the base and look around. I don't see how any fort or base could be any better than FLW. You'll learn to love it here. If you're headed here during the middle of March, you are going to be here just before I graduate.
I know you'll love it here. Plus, you'll be getting the better weather than what I've had. :D
Also, from the Graduation cycle, you could be heading to Bravo 795th, or Delta 796. That's just a guess of mine, though.

In the Marine Corps, we shot from 200, 300, and 500 yards with the M16A2. I never had an issue outta my rifle and I scored 236 outta 250 points, rifle expert. Yes sand comes into play, yes it's old, but to me it's still reliable. In fact I bought a Stag Arms Left handed AR-15 becouse I enjoy shooting it.

katieann, thanks for the heads up on FLW. My original ship date was 17 Sep but I managed to get the earlier ship date of 13 Mar so I am real excited but the reality of being away from my 2 daughters is also setting in. Anyways, got luck at AIT.
Letzrock, do you know the barrel length used for training? I am wanting to purchase another AR rifle but want one very similar to what we will be issued at BCT.

The standard barrel length on the M-16A2 should be 20"(inches).

Being away from family was very hard at first - but there are a few things you can do to help that. First, bring some pictures! Second, make sure that everyone you want to write you has your address. Stress to them that even the smallest note or card makes all the difference (mail call is the BEST time of day). Third, time. About the fifth week or so we were so busy that it was almost hard to go on worrying about family and things back home. Also, if you keep a journal make sure that you don't write anything bad about a DS or anyone else in it. During locker inspections the DS WILL read whatever you have lying around, and in your personal drawer. Some people did not have a good time during BCT because of their journals being read, lol. :)
