How is the guard given flight school slots? There are 10 slots available for my state/unit (not sure which, but there is only one aviation unit). Are those slots for specific classes, such as a slot in IERW class 015 (report 04 May 2008-end 09 Oct 2008), or is there a choice of what slots/classes are available?

This is a complicated situation. Each state has so many slots based on availability, force structure, DMOSQ rate, historical utilization rate, and priority placed by the state leadership. The state can get additional slots from NGB by various means, or swap the ones they have with other states or components.
You, of course, can only get what is available to you at the time, since the above machinations can take weeks to resolve. The Army doesn't have enough flight school seats to meet its needs. If you get a school seat, take it and keep it, because you might not get another chance.
