Hello all.30 year old male from illinois here and am trying to decide on what I want to do in the Guard.I am leaning toward Combat Engineer because I would like to learn construction skills so I can land a construction job in the civilian world.
However I am also considering Infantry cuz it is something I have always wanted to do..adventure/excitment,etc.
Any input from anyone in these MOS's is welcome as well as anyone who could tell me why their particular MOS is right for them.Thanks.

I picked 91W (combat medic). I picked it because being an EMT is a great skill to have, in or outside of the military. I get to help wounded warriors and see a little bit of combat.

Military Police (31B) I wanted to be a police officer and the training will help prepare me for my civilian career. I have been deployed once and that experience is the best thing that ever happened to me.
Military Police are also the best, that is another reason ;)

I picked 25B ( Information Technology Specialist) because i had already found myself working with computers all throughout high school. I learned a lot of computer science since then, so i picked a job that would fit closer to what i like doing.

Like jrobin I chose 31B (Military Police) because I am in school for my BA in Criminal Justice, and think that any and all of the training I recive in AIT will be benificial to the training I recive in school

Biggest factor to keep in mind is doing what you enjoy. When I was in high school I enjoyed studying weapons, military equipment and tactic from historical battles. I enlisted in the Marine Corps as an Intelligence Analyst and it was the greatest thing I could have done.
If you are looking for adventure and excitement, you will find it no matter what your MOS. As a MI I deployed with Marine Expeditionary Units around the world. I loved it. In modern warfare the "front-line" is diminishing. In our two current campaigns, it is primarily urban warfare. There is no front line.
Your enlistment commits you to X amount of years in a specialty field. Choose one you will enjoy, don't set yourself up for misery. Being in the military, any branch, will provide you with technical training and personal characteristics that will help you excel in your civilian career.
Me personally, if I can't retain my MOS as a 96B I will more than likely go 11B. My last year in the Marine Corps, I was a platoon sergeant. So being infantry will be easy for me. Plus, my intel background will be that much of a bonus should I have to meet combat again.

Yes,I do have a wife and 3 kids.
I ended up going with 88M(Motor Transport Operator).
The Unit I will be assigned to is pretty close to me,plus I can get a CDL out of it after I get back from AIT.
Shipping out to Fort Leonard Wood 20070320.
Also went to my first RSP last weekend.Great program.Definatley go if you have the chance. It will arm you with plenty of knowledge before you go to Basic.
It was a wake up call for me,let me know I need to get in shape and RUN!
Thank you all for the insightful responses.

All that anyone who is trying to decide on an MOS that would be transferable to the civilian job market needs to do... is to take a look at the endless lines of 18-wheelers on the interstates... the decision should be easy.
Of course it also depends on whether or not one wants to be a trucker.:)
Wise choice I'd say... thanks for your decision to serve!

Mind Bender, what is a 96B? I think I know, but can't be sure.
I chose 21V(Engineer-concrete & asphault) originally because that was all that was available. Had I been interested in being a civilian contractor, or road worker, this MOS would of have served me well. AIT was short and too easy in my mind. They tried to cram so much into 5 weeks it wasn't even funny. It rained a lot so we never even got to learn to operate the bitume-disbt. (that has to do with the hot road tar btw). I was also due to be deployed less than 3 months after my due date with my first child, and my husband was also to be deployed with his new unit after just having gotten back from Iraq(which I still don't know if they could actually do that to him or not). I was offered a honerable discharge for pregnancy and I took it. Now I want back in(call me crazy, but I miss it!) and my papers only went through in December. This time around, I want to be a 31B, MP. My mom and real dad were MP's and met on duty in Hawaii, and my husband is changing MOS to MP too since he is a civilian cop. I'm interested in opening my own animal rescue and maybe becoming an animal control officer and I think this would help me out, along with getting me back in my boots.
So like other posters said, don't settle, get what you want. I settled and ended up discharging and now I regret it. If your in an MOS you truely want to be, your less likely to leave it. Good Luck!
