I live in SD. I am 25, 5ft 2in, 150lbs (need to lose!), I have one daughter and my husband is in the Guard. Mu husband can probably answer these questions but I want to be educated more on the Guard before I spring my decision on him! What do I need to join? I know I should get in shape and lose weight how much should I lose? Also how do I pick an MOS and a Base to train at? Can I do Basic Training? I was in high school sports and in really good shape so I know that getting into shape and doing the physical things will be okay. The wall climbing scares me b/c I am really weak in the arms (even when I was in sports I still was!) Also my main question is does my employer have to hold my job until training is over? How long is training from start to finish (considering there are no set backs)? I cannot afford to lose this job that I love and want to keep doing. Thank you!

By law, your employer can not fire you for leaving to do military training. They have to hold your job for you.
The only advice I can really offer you is to work on your upper body strength. I'm not enlisted yet, so I don't know how bad basic is. I would start now, working on push ups, chin ups, weight lifting, etc. so that you can build the strength in your arms.

Your employer HAS to hold your job per federal regulations. and your training length would just depend on your mos. Basic training is 9 weeks, plus however long your AIT is.

132 pounds is the maximum weight you can be for a female your age/height. I found this information on the home page, changing the preference on the upper left corner to 'customize this site' to non-prior service, going to the training tab and clicking on 'guard standards'. There is also a way that they measure your body fat if you are over that weight standard by measuring certain body areas. A recruiter or possibly your husband could give you more details on that one.
Personally I researched different jobs (Mos) that I thought i'd be interested in for varies reasons. You have to decide how far you are willing to travel for your obligations and also what Mos's those units have available. There has to be an open slot for you to fill. A recruiter is the only one that can help you on that one along with a little digging around maybe on the internet to see what the units are.
I have not gone to basic yet and i'm a bit older, i'll turn 33 during basic. It isnt going to be a walk in the park. You are going to help yourself tremendously by starting NOW with your jogging and strenght training. If time, money, or equipment is an issue, i'd suggest doing the basics...push-ups, sit-ups (ask hubby how to do a correct military one) and other general things like that.
There is a law to protect your job. You can find it online. They have to hold your position or a simular one for you while gone for training or deployment. The length of your initial training, basic training (Bct) and job training (Ait) depend on your Mos. Likely Bct will be nine weeks plus aprox. a week of inprocessing beforehand. Ait completely depends on your Mos, anywhere from six weeks to a year+, on average about nine weeks.
