I will be attending LTC in a couple of weeks, and I originally planned to go active once I graduate from my MBA program. However, I learned recently that my eyesight (-10.5 in both eyes) will probably make me ineligible for active army and army reserve.

Can you tell me what my commitment would be if I am a scholarship cadet versus a non-scholarship cadet in the ANG? Also, if I can work full time in the guard once I am commissioned, will this reduce the number of years I owe the Guard?

I originally planned to serve four years in active duty and return to the private sector. I am wondering if I can serve four years full time in the guard and fulfill my commitment.

Thanks for your feedback.

For scholarship cadets, your National Guard commitment is eight years of drilling. Ref: AR 135-91, Table 2-1.

Please note that had you served four years of active duty, you would still have had another four years of IRR time. You face a statistically greater likelihood of mobilization in the IRR than as a drilling Guard Soldier.
