Giving an IV

I heard that when you are in basic, you have to practice giving someone an IV. I kinda don't like needles, is this true?

I am quite sure you heard wrong. If you're going to be an Army Medic, you will probably have to do that in AIT.

In Basic I believe you learn basic medical, from what I understand, but I don't know if you learn IV's or not.

You do not learn how to use IVs, well thats from what i know from when i went, now you can learn in later if you want

Along with all the other guys that replied, I too never did it in basic or heard of that being done. You just learn first aid. The only course that I know of that you learn to give IV's is "CLC" (Combat Lifesaver Course) and this is a voluntary course. Our National Guard unit did have any CLC's, just medics. When I was in the Regular Army our unit had to have at least 1 CLC in every platoon.

Can you only take CLC if you are a 91W? Or is this open to anyone who is interested?

I don't know about now. When I was in basic the taught only basic first aid. Now in 91B school I guess 91W for all of you young-bucks LOL. Thats when you learn IVs and stuff!

If you are a 91w you TEACH the Combat lifesaver course. :D

Anyone in the military can go to CLS training it is up to your leadership to get soldiers signed up.

what about 91E? a dental specialist... since it is in the medical feild, does the IV practicing apply to me?

The BCT POI has never included IV's... You will NOT learn in BCT.

CLC is all about learning IV's. The units mission and money will determine how many CLS personel they can carry.

Combat life saver course if offer to all military personnel at one point. Its a three day course, which certifies you to be a combat life saver. And best advice for you LOOK FOR THE VEIN!

My ex girlfriend (an MP) spoke of sticking people, but I think it is because she was CLS. I seriously doubt they cover that at BCT. As a phlebo and a soon to be 68W I can say that it's no big deal if they do, it's just needles.

I dont know about in AIT, but in my unit (which is a medical company), EVERYONE practiced initiating saline locks/giving iv's. Its all up to what your commander wants I guess.
