Hi, I'm about to be a freshman in college, and had a question about ROTC scholarships. Someone told me that if I accepted one, my contract would be voided in the NG and I'd have to wait until I was finished with ROTC to be in again. I'd like the scholarship, but not if it voids my contract.

and second, the three year NG scholarship, you can get that one in your sophmore year?

oh, and finally, my unit is will be going to Japan for about a month in January, how would that affect my school?

If you take a campus-based scholarship, yes, you'll be discharged from the Guard. You want a National Guard scholarship, so you can keep drilling, keep earning years of service and retirement, and keep earning Tuition Assistance. If TA pays your tuition, you can use the Guard's ROTC scholarship to pay room & board on campus. Ensure you get a "Dedicated Army National Guard" scholarship. An ARNG-GRFD scholarship is also acceptable, but a rarer animal (it's a long story). Speak to your ROTC enrollment officer today about this, because you want to make the arrangements now, so everything is ready for next semester.

If your unit's annual training period interrupts your school year, you really should have this conversation with your school's administrators and professors.

Thanks for that information, I really appreciate it. So I can apply for the dedicated scholarship now, and I can receive it my sophomore year?
