Hi -

I'm interested in joining the guard. However, I already have a really good full-time job that I love very much. So what I'm pretty concerned about is losing my full time job if they didn't like the fact that I might be away for awhile. Are they obligated to keep me if I do decide to join & go to Basic training? Also, if I ever get shipped out & will be gone for awhile. Would they be obligated to keep me or do they have the right to release me? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

By Federal law, they are required to hold your job (during BCT, deployment, even during drill weekends). There are also legal avenues to pursue if your business does fire you because of your military service. If you talk to a recruiter, they can give you all the specifics on the law.

Hope this helps; You may find that even though the law is behind you on your rights to join and keep your job,you can still lose it.My question is this,do you want a job that would turn its back on a American willing to set aside their personal life to help this country?Think about it.Good luck

To wit, look at www.esgr.org.

If your boss treats you reasonably, ensure that you log him into ESGR and nominate him for an award. They have a basic award that everyone gets, but there are higher awards that only the coolest employers get (i.e., those that continue your salary while you're deployed). Nevertheless, it's worth a minute of typing to get the boss a little certificate and happyletter, which may keep him cooperative in the future.
