SSGT. Davis:
I'm a displaced airmen as my unit is being deactivated (see brac attack for details) and am an E-8 in the Air Force Reserve. As my unit is being deactivated I've been looking for a unit close to the SE PA area and have put together my paperwork for the DE ANG at New castle. I got a call the other day telling me that I was approved by the guard bureau for a 1 year enlistment with a 1 year extension available. I take it this is because of my rank and the fact I'm able to be carried as an overage for two years due to the brac. The question is what happens after the extension, assuming that my performance is up to par? I take it if I find a "real" E-8 slot during that time it shouldn't be a problem but if I don't will I be sent packing a few years shy of 20 or get the same kind of offer I've getting from some other recruiters(Army guard etc)...yeah we'd love to have you but we can only give you an E4 slot?
I'm not too full of myself to lose a stripe if I have to retrain but all the back to E4 ouch!
Thanks in advance,
Steve

I have a friend that was in the Air National Guard, he is a TSgt he has two AFSC's 2S071 and 2T051. He put himself in the retired reserve (Not yet age 60) so he could take care of his mother, now he wanted to come back into the Air Guard so he went to talk to the Air Guard recruiter and they have told him that The Air Guard is no longer taking back any retired reserve or IRR personnel. they have told him that this is due to the Air National Guard and the Air Force reserve has to Streamline the reserves (Too many people). He was told he would have better luck in joining the Army National Guard. Is this true?

Typically as long as you get to 18 yrs service your in sacuary but after checking with the old guys here, they say to really make sure you confirm that where your going so there is no misunderstandings. Usually they would see that the 2 yr tour would put you in sacuary and not approve it, so check and re-check with where your going I'd say! Good luck!

Discharged December 2004. RE-Code:3, Separation: JFV. I was discharged during BCT at Ft.Knox, Kentucky. My MOS would have been 91W.
I received a DUI in July of 2006. It was a misdemeanour, not a felony. I just completed the state mandated DUI 4 month program. Other than that I am on a 3-year probation and have no other obligation to the state other than to stay out of trouble. haha.
I know its a tough situation for any recruiter to deal with and obviously waivers are needed but in your experience is it possible? Im certain you have seen it all and I was merely looking for an informed opinion.
Ive made alot of mistakes because I was young and obviously very stupid. Regardless, I did call the ANG yesterday and he said he was going to look through my paperwork and what not.
I heard that I may have to wait until my probation is done and if that is the case, do you still think its worth it on my part to give it a go? I do, the problem is that so many recruiters have blown me off and not given me the time of day...the ANG rec did not do that though and it seems like he really wants to try and work with me. Much appreciated on my part.

You will need a waiver for the RE code of 3 and it will depend on why you got a 3 RE code. Also you will need a waiver for the DUI and that cant be done until after its been a year and yes you MUST be off probation.

I am married with a child, and was told that I will be able to get a housing allowance. He told me that I would get it during AIT. The question that he couldn't answer is whether I would be getting the allowance during basic.
What is the deal with this?

If a person chooses to go into a job that requires 52 weeks of AIT what will happen to their family. In a year program, is a married person allowed to bring his wife and child along, or are you unable to see your family.

I'm pretty sure that you start getting housing allowance during tech school and even then you dont get full housing allowance you get a portion of it. Thats just the way it is.

Im pretty sure that with such a long school you will be allowed to move your family to where your at school. If it is 52 weeks at a number of locations Im sure thats different it will depend how long your at a location. Make sure to ask your recruiter, he will have the answer to that question for sure.

You really need to wait on him, these things do take time, he wouldnt tell you he sent it out if didnt. He wants you qualifed too. Give it some more time and be patient. I know it's frustrating but anything other than waiting will not get it resolved any faster.

Okay, I am going to be brutally honest, but first I beg everyone who replies to be civil. This is the first time I have really come forward and I need some help. I was discharged from the Navy on 2/15/07 on an Entry Level Separation while in Boot Camp. I am very ashamed of the basis of my discharge. The guilt in my heart over a lost opportunity and making a very bad decision knows no bounds. I was discharged with a RE4 code and my separation code is JDA. I missed my wife and my newborn kid so bad, that I lied my way out. I told the psychologist I was suicidal and had a bunch of pschological issues. The truth is there was nothing wrong with me, I just wanted to see my baby and wife so bad. Now I feel awful, I look at the men and women serving and I cannot even bear to look them in the face. I am pleading for a second chance, I know this is going to very tough, but I am asking for a chance to right my wrong. I know I am going to need a waiver, I have since tried to talk to the other branches and the recruiters want nothing to do with me. I just want to serve, it has always been a lifelong dream of mine. I have contacted a Doctor to get a psychiatric/psycological evaluation to prove my sanity and I will be paying for this by myself. I made mistake and I need help in trying to get back in. You can call me a coward and I will not argue with you. Please somebody help me to get back in and fulfill a dream that I have almost thrown away. I am in Omaha, NE and I will be graduating from college in a year. I am willing to make the sacrifice, All I ask is for a chance

Usually this is not something anyone would waive. I know you don't want to hear that but it's just to risky. It's the way regulations have been writen and usually makes sense because really why spend money once again on someone who has proven to have the cabability to lie to get out of something. When there's so many others who have/will not.
I'm just telling you how it is. You seem very motivated to get back at it and thats rough, because you seem like a sincere guy.
I recommend that you visit the recruiters of the branches you'd be willing to join and tell them the story and point blank ask if there's anyway in. Ask for an "exception to policy" request.
If you reach a dead end which is likely then write a letter to your congressmen asking for him/her to assist you in getting back in. Tell your story in the letter.
Most of all remember do not act like the system has let you down. Don't act like these other people should have done something to get you in. This approach will NOT work.
You must take responsability for your actions in your letter just as you have done here. I respect what your trying to do and wish you the best of luck.

I am currently active duty and I'm trying to become a helicopter pilot. I need an age waiver in order to get in as active duty which was recently denied. I've heard waivers are easier in the Guard. Is it possible to switch from active duty to the guard? My current ets date April 2010. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to contact the Guard recruiter in the area where you want to move to and have him start sign and give you a DD368 Conditional Release form. This form if approved by your Commander will allow you to get off active duty to join the Guard Army or Air - Good Luck

3 or 6 years are the lowest, but you don't really get any benefits for 3 years

Generally it is 4 or 6 yrs doing 1 week end a month and 2 weeks a tr with 4 or 2 yrs at the end of those yrs being in-active. So no matter where or who you join there is always an 8 yr obligation period no matter what anyone says.

I am thinking of enlisting in September, i was looking at military police and it looks like a good MOS for me since I want to be in the SWAT team as a career. I am very worried about getting seriously wounded or killed so that’s the biggest thing keeping me from choosing. But I do want to help my country and I don’t want to be just another kid in high school screwing around, I want to be doing something great, my girlfriends brother is in the CT national guard and he loves it but he’s also not afraid of dyeing. I am not leaning to one or the other I am totally half way on it, I just want some suggestions. Thanks

You need to set up a family care plan which is a plan with people signing saying that they will care for your children in the event that you are deployed. That's what we do here in the AIR National Guard anyway.

I am in the same boat as luislyricz....I was honrably discharged in ap 01 with a separation code of jkk re3.(dirty urinalyisis) I went to the rehab and paid out of my own pocket, took my physical in January, and my waiver to the NAtional Guard Bureau was submitted in Feburary, and I still have not heard anything. my recuiter says that he cannot bother the state liason to the NGB every week or he gets in trouble, and i am trying to be patient, but a few other guardsmen that i talked to told me my waiver should be back already. I get the same one line answer every week and i am just getting frustrated. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Let's start with other Guardsman have told me: First of all unless they are a recruiter or have been a recruiter then they really have NO idea how long a specific type of waiver takes to get approved, sorry just the truth.
2nd: your recruiter has much to gain by getting the waiver approved asap but is required to do the waiver a certain way.
I GUARANTEE when the waiver is approved or disapproved he will contact you immediatly. There's no doubt in my mind at all.
When you do stupid things like smoke pot while in the military you definatly are at the mercy of the system later when you want another shot.
Either way I would not get your hopes up to much as those waivers most likely will be disapproved.
Sorry if this is not info you'd like to read but Im just being completely honest with you. This is just the way it is man. I wish you all the luck in the world.

I understand what you are saying Sgt Davis, it was my mistake that I made 6 years ago. It was my choice to take the chapter that was offered to me and it was a huge mistake(Chapter is standard for a servicemember who has been in three years and comes up with a hot test.) I completley understand why i am at the bottom of his list for any waivers, however, the only reason I am suspicious of my recruiter is because initally, when i went to him, he offered to forge my DD214, claiming that he had done it for people before, i obviously declined his offer, or else i would not have been posting on here. Secondly, when he was filing my paperwork, he made many mistakes that caused the waiver to be sent back 2 times so far because of errors. I know that the waiver went through the state and is now sitting at the NGB. It isn't like I need to join the guard, i just feel it is the right thing to do. I was also wondering if you personally have ever submitted any waivers like mine. Thanks again for your help.

The proper way is to go to MEPS after the waiver is approved. It saves money for a test and physical if the waiver is NOT approved.

Now that the age limit was raised, I would like to take the opportunity to serve. I do have a Misdemeanor Disturbing the peace charge in 05/1996, a misdemeanor larceny charge under $1,000 in 10/1997, and 3 misdemeanor, non-DUI, traffic offenses as shown on my Criminal Background. What steps would you suggest for someone like me who is more than willing to do whatever it takes to have the opportunity to serve my country?

Contact your local recruiters from whatever branch your interested in and find out if your qualified to join. Should be in your phone book or go to the branch website and request info, a recruiter will contact you if you do that. Good Luck

No idea why my threads are not posting... sorry to post to this one but nothing else was working. I am 36 yrs old and did the 3 yr 17 wk thing in the early 90's. Honorable Discharge as Spc 4. I now have my degree and want to get back to it, but take the officer route. I am approaching the end of the line age wise but can still squeak in. I went to a recruiter last year and he sent m epacking saying that my only option was ot go to OCS at Ft Benning straight through .. I read on this site that there is now a state ocs program that you can go through on the weekends and (2) two week sessions... Is that true? When I mentioned the officer route at the recruiting officer he took a seriously bad attitude and couldn;t be bothered.. I would like to get at least some info before going back there... It was very discouraging... Anyway, thanks fo rwhatever advice/info you have!

My name is David Wilhelm. I see that you are the go-to recruiter on this forum. I was wondering if you have ever heard of someone waiting for over 3 months to hear from the NGB to get the go ahead from MEPS. That is the point that I am at now. I have some med issues as well as some moral. I have been to the recruiter in Kingston, NY, and have been waiting to hear from the NGB on the med issues for 3+ months now.
Thank you,

Did you go to a National Guard recruiter? If not thats who you would want to contact, if you dont get anywhere like that contact me privately and let me know waht state your in.

Hi,
I was in the Army Guard from 1992-1994. I was in the split option program. I went to basic in the summer of 1992. I completed it. I never shipped in the summer of 1993 because I was overweight. I was given a general discharge and a Re-3 code. I was in for 2 years and 2 months.
I am losing the weight now and I want to rejoin. A recruiter told me that I am a glossary non-prior service and I would have to do basic again. I was also told my TIS would not count and that I would have to start that over again. I was also told something completely different by other recruiter. What is true?
Thanks
You do not need to re-do basic training, but get the weight off then find out the details. Bottom line is you can join if you get the weight off, do that FIRST then go talk to a recruiter. Check out other services as well.

I just spent a week at the local fair. The Army National Guard had a high jump thing and a pull up bar and the marines had a pull up bar. We brought our plasma tv and show car. They both had t-shirts and we had frisbees, pens and back packs.
We all got along and helped eachother, it was the best working relationship between branches I've seen yet. Thanks for showing me theres good Soldiers and Marines out there, it was great seeing us all work together.

SSGT Davis,
I have hypothyroidism controlled by medication. Recruiters told me in the past that this is an automatic disqualification, so I went on with life. But, about.com's military site says that it is not disqualifying. They quote a DOD directive on the site. So am I eligible to join? I would want to do the OCS option. (I have a degree.) Thanks!

Ask your recruiter to submit your medical records to MEPS in order to get approva; for you to physical. Bring in ALL medical records to the recruiter, this will make it very easy for him/her to submit them. Good luck

They should NOT charge but the best thing to do is get everything regarding a certain issue to assure you have what is needed.

Good evening SSgt Davis,
I enlisted in the ARNG in the first week of June. I chose a MOS that placed me with a unit 60 miles away. I now rather drill with a unit 3 miles from my home. This would however require me to change my MOS. I leave for BCT/AIT in a little over 5 weeks. Is it too late to change my MOS prior to my ship date? (My recruiter seems be unsure of the answer.) If so, will this change affect my enlistment bonus if both MOSes are critical jobs? Thank you for your time.

It will work out fine if they are both critical, yes your recruiter can do it but it will require some work on his/her part. Have your recruiter start and if he/she acts unsure then ask for his/her supervisors number to call. Let your recruiter think you will request getting out if they dont change it. Remember this: the loudest wheel gets the most greese, just be professional and respectful, yet forceful. Good luck

I see. But, I wonder why asthma is made such a big deal over. I understand that it's for safety reasons but, there a far more things things that could jeprodize the safety of other soldiers. There are even Olympic athletes that have asthma, but that doesn't stop them from doing physical activities. It just upsets me that asthma is made up to be such a handicap.
I really want to join the Guard. I've had one asthma attack when I was a child, but none after that. I can do physical activities without using an inhaler.
I still have one just in case I have a flare up but I rarely do nowadays. I'm still going to see if I qualify for service. I'm not going to let a DQ stop me from reaching my goals! And if I don't, at least I can say I tried.:D

There really is no way to find out what they have in the works, they will not make that public knowledge. Im sure your recruiter knows what he is talking about, when you join thou you get a guaranteed job in writing whatever that job is will be your permanent job, that simple.

Under the college first program, if I enlist as a senior in High School, do I need to already have chosen a college when I enlist? it says you "must be accepted within 60 days of completing AIT" but it seems to me that if I start training after I graduate Highschool, AIT for most MOSes won't finish until after the school year for college has already begun. How does that work?

Good Evening SGT. Davis, I just enlisted into the Virginia Army National Guard as a E-2, Unit Supply Specialist. I don't ship out to BCT/AIT until March 27, 2009. I was wondering if I could get LASIK before BCT? I spoke to my recruiter and he said that I could not get it before BCT because that would medically disqualify me. But afterwards I can get it anytime. Is there any truth to this? Why does it matter if I get LASIK done now or later I don't ship out for a couple of months and have plently of time to heal.

Non-Approved LASIK eye surgery is a disqualifing condition, so if you get it done before you ship you will be DQed, so DO NOT get it done til you get back just like your recruiter said, he is correct. Good luck.

LASIK has been approved by the army, so please dont be confused on standards between the Army and Airforce. So you can go get LASIK done. SGT Davis is a AIR force national guard recruiter here on the Army guard site just trying to give his experience and info. But do remmber alot of things differ from branch to branch.
For recruiters out there you should email me and get the new MEPS regulation and standards on LASIK eye surgery, no medical waivers required if you do it the right way.

I just read the new info on LASIK as well since MEPS is who qualifies all applicants attempting to join any branch of service and I do see that LASIK eye surgery is a disqualifier unless it was under certain conditions which require 3, 6 and month check ups and the documentation that goes with those check ups must be sumbitted.
So in short if you've had LASIK eye surgery and are wanting to ENLIST just make sure to have ALL medical documentation regarding the surgery and followups with you when you go visit any recruiter.
If you want to be a pilot then you are required to have a "Flight Physical Class I" which if you've had LASIK eye surgery not done or scheduled by the Department of Defense you may be disqualified for becoming a pilot. Do not get LASIK eye surgery prior to joining the military if you ever plan on becoming a pilot.

I've been seriously considering going back to the Army National Guard as a recruiter. Not that there's something wrong with the Air Guard, but I miss what the Army has to offer sometimes. People are a little more upfront, less politics and the theory of "Get the Job Done" runs strong in the Army where as in the Air Guard, we spend a little more time debating and discussing things in stead of jumping in and getting it done.
We shall see what happens, hopefully they can offer me atleast the same money, otherwise I'll be forced to stay in the Air Guard.

Domestic Violence convictions due DQ you from enlistment b/c of the Lautenberg Law - in which I guess under this law a person can not be giving permission to carry weapons.

The reference to domestic violenece was to another poster on the page before this one.
And wait times vary, you can also look up AR 601-210 and USAREC Regulation 601-56
You can google these and look over them, they go over waivers and waiver processing. It will give you some idea of how the waiver process works.
I had been waiting on a waiver myself, this is the second time my waiver has been sent up (due to some goofy stuff that was entered by the courts I had to get my lawyer to get more paperwork from the judge) and I just got a call today from the BN Commander. I dont believe that a waiver is allowed for applicants that have domestic on their record.
Negative, at no time is a domestic anything available for the waiver process. Generally, if it involves spouses, kids, or anything extremely violent or ***ual in nature, you can guarantee it's a no-go

Thanks silly Sally for doing that flash report for me today. I'm proud to have my niece as the latest addition to the Army National Guard.

I am prior service 10 years split between national guard and active duty. I received a misdemeanor domestic violence charge from my ex wife. We are no longer married. I had the charge expunged sometime later. I have nothing on my records. I have never been in trouble except for this. Will this prevent me going back in. I was previously a 92Y and held a secret security clearance.
Thx

I recently recieved an enry-level erroneous enlsitment/uncharacterized discharge RE-3 with an assignment/loss code of EG. I was told that the contract was void because I was not eligable to be contracted as an SMP enlistment at the time. This was the second time and the first time was voided/thrown out for the same reason. Consequently my contract pay grade and MOS was changed.
I was told that I could fix it myself by contracting with ROTC or that I could receive an erroneous enlistment because the contract was void. Since I was close the graduating college at the time Contracting with ROTC was not really an option anymore. I was told that the erroneous enlistment was of no fault of my own and shouldnt have been done.
Is it possible to re-enlist in a situation such as this because I really would like to re-enlist ASAP after graduating in May. I've also heard rumors that you need to wait one year before re-enlisting. Is there waivers for this sort of situation and are they likely to be approved and if so could I try to re-enlist right away or is there normally a waiting period. I would appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks alot

sgt Davis,
Can you tell me about how long it would take a waiver for prior service in Navy 1995 ELS Uncharictirized with a sep code of JFX??? I have been working with a recruiter in texas now for about 2 months and just am curious if this is something that can be done or not. I was very young and very immature at that time and I am now 31 and I have done a lot of growing up since then! I have never been diagnosed with any disorder, but since the navy put that on there I am not sure what I need to do??

Recently there was a PS guy who got a waiver done and then went on a shooting spree, as of today ALL AG level and above waivers for PS are on hold while they look at the process. Only medical waivers are allowed to be sent forward for processing, so your answer is, I dont know how long it will take now. Stay in touch with your recruiter for more info.

Look up the "Soldiers and Sailors Act of 1942" there might be something in there that you could use.

Good afternoon/morning SGT,
I am ps ad mp w/ 5 yrs, re 1, and an honorable and all that good stuff, my current situation is that i'm attempting to go AGR and eventually become a recruiter, although I have no prior NG experience.
But heres my question; I was told I should go back in as an MP so I don't have to get MOSQ and i'll get my bonus right after enlisting as a lump sum, but I would prefer to do something different and am wondering if they will split my bonus and do the half after MOSQ and half at 3 yr point when i've already been in for 5 years active and 1.5 IRR, or if its possible to receive a lump sum after MOSQ.
I appear to of lost my knack for finding the appropriate AR's! So I appreciate you ( or anyone ) pointing me in the right direction! Thanks for your time and all the help you've given everyone on this board.
S. Miller
P.S SGT Bridge helped me out with the AGR part earlier ( thanks again ) and I just want to be sure that if I do go this route with a new MOS it won't seem like i'm picking up the new MOS just to ditch out on it, i'll be excited to be doing something new in the army :D and am just looking to find the best way to make it while i'm in again.

If you get a new MOS then you will get half your bonus after MOS school and then other half at the 3 yr mark, unless you join a scheduled to mobilize Unit in which then you'll get lump sum bonus after your MOSQed. If your goal is to get an AGR job then your best off to just stay in your current MOS and start appling to AGR positions once your in, you can apply for AGR jobs that you are not MOSQed in, just if and when you get the job youll need to go to the MOS school.

Well if the wife has issues with her husband going to get his GED to better their life, then how will she handle it when he has to go to basic and MOS school and be gone for 5 months or more?
Go to your local recruiters office for more details. Bottom line here is that if someone joins without a GED we will provide the needed resources for them to get it.

You will not go active first. But you can go active. You request a DD 369 or whats called a conditional release. As long as your unit is not getting deployed more than likely it will get approved.
I would join at 17 if i was you, it starts your Time in service, and for pay as well as lets you work up the ranks earlier.

Hi, I have a question about enlisting with medical issues. I have a few minor ones and two big ones, and would appreciate if you could tell me if I have any chance at getting into the Guard. The two big ones are anosmia (no sense of smell), and an endocrine disorder that requires hormone replacement therapy once a week, although I am looking into treatment options that would be every 3-5 months. The minor ones (relatively speaking) are hearing loss in one ear from nerve damage, and I have sensitive skin, so I am prone to getting eczema. I also sometimes have anemia, but that is related to the endocrine disorder (and whether I am on my medication or not).
It seems like a long shot to get waivers for all that, but joining the Army is something that means a lot to me. It's not just about college money...I want to serve my country, and my family has a long history of military service. I know from what I've read that I probably would not get into a combat MOS (especially with anosmia), but I would be happy and proud to serve in any capacity.
Am I wasting my time, or it is worth pursuing? I am currently in California, but I'm moving to Louisiana in a month (to go to college), so I would be enlisting there. Thanks.

ibelieve youd be disqualified, bring your medical records to your local recruiter who can submit them for review, if approved youll be able to physical, but likely youll be disqualified as anyone with on going needed medication usually is, regardless of he resons for the medication. good luck

I just finished telling my friend about my plans to join the National Guard and he said he'd been thinking about joining the military too. After a little bit more talking, he sounded pretty interested in the National Guard too. Anyway, I know that the regular Army has a program that if you and a friend enlist together, you are more or less guaranteed (or at least have a decent chance) of going to BCT together. Does the National Guard have a similar program?

Sgt Davis-
i have a question. I was told that medical units are within the active and reserve ranks because they are the only ones that have hospitals.
I was told that I can retrain in another MOS....or go directly to work in the Unit's S-4 since i am already MOSQ'd as a 92A
since Im only committed for 2-3 years, can I retrain in 68A, 68KP9, 68WM6, or 68PN2 -- these are all MOS with 48 weeks or more AIT's.
Im not sure how the guard works seeing as if I cant find a medical unit within the state of VA, I will be going to an Aviation unit of which my roomate is the Company Commander and I think they only have medics.
My recruiter said i can pic any MOS that I want if the guard has it....and I can go to any unit within the state.
But if the guard doesnt have Hospitals or medical units....wouldnt the likelyhood of any of those jobs being available be slim to none?

about how many classes a year does Infantry School have? I ask because I want to try to get a ship date for OSUT close to the end of summer. well I definitely dont want to be a Quartermaster anymore. so since I am MOSQ'd rom the Air Force in medical supply can I just go into that field or will I be forced to be a 92A because that was my most recent MOS.
The six years wont bother me...I plan to apply to the PA program if they wont commission me as an Audiologist in 2 years anyway.

This is amazing, I can enlist people from anywhere, also if you need a GED, we will send you to a school in AR to get the GED, plus pay you for doing it. Also college students are guaranteed not to deploy as long as they are fulltime students in college. Its called the "College Fist Program" find out more by calling me, Sgt Davis at 518-225-1898
I was reading back through this thread just for the heck of it. Do you guys still send to AR for the GED plus program or do you now send your soldiers to the one at FTIG?? Just out of curiosity.

Thank you for offering your expertise on these recruiting issues.
I have a question, though.
This is an excerpt from: http://afreserve.com/?:Prior%20Service#Benefits and I'd like to know if you can shed some light on this paragraph:
# Education assistance. Education is encouraged in the Reserve. The Montgomery GI Bill is available, and it is non-contributory. The Reserve also offers a 100 percent Tuition Assistance program. You can earn credits toward an Associates Degree at the Community College of the Air Force, and, again this is free as is specialized training that may help you earn valuable licenses, such as FAA Certificates. Some training, such as pilot's training, that may not be available on Active Duty, may be available in the Reserve. And, there can also be special bonuses and incentives available to those going into critically needed areas.
1st.- Where's this community college of the Air Force?
2nd.- Earning valuable licenses, such as FAA certificates? Which certificates? and are they available regardless of MOS!?!?
3rd and last.- training such as pilot's training!?!? Again, to whom?
I ask all of this because although my career is in medical, I also hold a pilot's license issued by the FAA via a civilian flight school, just from a life lasting passion to flight that never materialized into a career, nothing big, just a Private Pilot's license, VFR, single engine land, piston, fixed gears and 3/4 instrument rating that unfortunately did not complete, therefore I do not hold an IFR rating.
I know this is a lot of info to swallow and I understand if you don't reply soon but after reading your original post I thought that you may be someone who just may know.
I thank you again.

thanks a lot Sgt Davis. You have truly been a help to me on this site. Not just in my questions that need answering, Im learning a lot from your responses to other's questions.
Im trying to put myself on the correct career path and Im not quite sure how to go about it....therefore i have two questions...
the first deals with what you have been helping me with....
I have a MS in Speech and Hearing Sciences which academically qualifies me to be direct commissioned into AMEDD....however, I have some administrative issues from a prior enlistment that is going to make me have to go back on the enlisted side....and then back door my way into AMEDD....my ultimate goal is to be an Army Medical Officer....now whether that is me being an Audiologist, a PA, an RN or a MD....Im open to any of those fields.
however being enlisted first...Im told I have to pick an MOS. I dont think they are going to look at it as retraining since I was separated from AIT (although I completed it). I think I just had the option to stay in either medical or automated supply. However i choose to learn a new MOS.
Now my questions iare....since Im not being considered as a reclassifying (MOS) soldier, arent I eligible for the try one or the 2 year enlistment? Does the College first program apply to me as a Prior Service Soldier? (I can knock out a PhD in two years or go to nursing/PA school on the civilian side). And finally, if I sign up for 3 years, how long do I need to work in the MOS before I can try for a program like Nursing or PA (in the event i cant do the college first thing on the civilian side?)

thanks a lot Sgt Davis.
The college first program only applies to NPS members, never been in before. You could do a try one from what Im hearing but not if your crosstraining since you need to do 3 years when cross training, also a 3 year enlistment does not entitle you to any bonuses and if your going to be getting your MD in 2 years just do the 6 yr enlistment for the bonus knowing that once you have your MD youll put in for an officier position. Hope that helps, good luck

Tony,
1st.- Where's this community college of the Air Force? You get credits for your training theres no building or place, just college credits for your training
2nd.- Earning valuable licenses, such as FAA certificates? Which certificates? and are they available regardless of MOS!?!? You get training that prepares you for taking the tests needed to get these certificates
3rd and last.- training such as pilot's training!?!? Again, to whom? If someone qualifies they submit a pilot application if accepted they go to pilot training

Okay that clears a lot up for me....maybe i need to find out exactly what cross training means then.
From what i understand, since i was chaptered out, when I renlist Im eligible to pick an entirely different MOS despite the ones that I am MOSQ'd for.
Is that correct?
and i cant get an MD in 2 years...I only have a Masters degree.
However, I can get a PhD or a Nursing Degree or even a PA degree in 2 years.
so with these options....if you were me....would you still do the six year option knowing that I will be attempting to become an officer soon anyway?

Yes do the 6 years, when you get your PHd or decide to put in for an officer job you can do so regardless of the time you have left on your 6 years.

I got an Uncharacterized(Entry Level Separation),SPD Code: JFC, Erroneous Entry (Other). I was told by someone Navy to go guard and heard that I could easily get a waiver. Is that true? Once out of the guard would I be able to go Navy?
*Sorry for the re-post*
Yes once out of the Guard you could join another service provided you have a good record.

Remember: If you have completed atleast 9th grade and do not have a GED, we can help you. Just pass the ASVAB test and enlist and the National Guard will pay your way to AR for 2-3 weeks of schooling and then have you pass the GED test. You also get a fulltime pay check for this time.

Much appreciated on my part.
did you get an other that honorable discharge or general under honorable? If you got either, I will suggest you also check with the army board of corrections on getting your discharge upgraded. plus whatever you doing in the civilian world, do a good job to solidify yourself as reliable and someone that can stay out of trouble. good luck

if the guard accepts it, it will be on a one year condition then if you want to switch services, the navy would have to want you again and then you will need a condition release from the guard if they want to release you. this will take a long while so remember that.

Just to let all know...The Air Force does not accept prior service.
Also, if your last period of ACTICE DUTY service has an RE Code that does not allow you to come back in, you could do 20+ good traditional Guard years, and the active Army will go back to your LAST PERIOD of ACTIVE SERVICE. If you get deployed and get another DD214, then that new discharge becomes your last period of active service.
I am not sure about the Navy.

Sometimes the Air Force accepts prior Air Force depending on their AFSC, but the Army National Guard has much more to offer to prior service than the Air Force anyway!

Just a reminder that all Prior Service members have the option to sign up for a ONE year (TRY ONE PROGRAM) in the Army National Guard. If your in the IRR then it's to your benefit to just try the Guard out for a year. This takes you out of the IRR where your just sitting waiting to get activated.
I've had a number of IRR soldiers that have been activated come into my office and try to join the National Guard, but once you get orders from IRR to be activated theres nothing anyone can do. So take action now and control where and what you do.

Hi, I've been searching through several military forums and have been unable to find the answer to my question. I was hoping maybe you could help me out. I have been trying to get into the Army National Guard for over a year now, it has taken this long due to various waivers, miscommunications, etc. Anyway I just heard back from my recruiter and was DQ'd by MEPS, again. I was DQ'd for bilateral compartment syndrome and my recruiter has sent up a waiver request to NGB. This problem has been surgically corrected in May 2008. I have had no problems since then. I am a very active person and I play college softball, so if there was going to be a problem I'm sure it would have already occurred. I was wondering if you have ever put anyone in with this medical condition or know of anyone currently serving with it. Also, do you know what Army regulations state about this? I have tried looking online and found what I think are the Army regs for enlistment but it didn't say a word about compartment syndrome. If you could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Do you think I can get in? How long do these types of waivers usually take? I'm so sick of playing the waiting game, I've done it for over a year now.
I was also wondering if you knew anything about the Army Physical Therapy School at Baylor University. I've checked out their website but am still looking for more information.
Thanks for all your help.

Contact your state's AMEDD recruiter about PT school. Your recruiter should know how to get in touch with the medical recruiters.
IIRC, compartment syndrome can be a permanently disqulifying condition to enlistment, but I'm sure somebody else can tell you for sure if waivers for it are being approved now.

Update: 31 and up on the asvab can enlist right now. There's few or no bonus depending on job and state.
NO ged certificates for entry, however if you have no ged and no high school diploma but youve completed atleast the 9th grade you can join, provided you meet all enlistment criteria.
So as you can see not nearly as many restrictions as last year, so join now because it all could change again very soon.
Last year theres so many people who were turned away that now are enlistable, dont let yourself end up in the same boat as those people.
JOIN NOW while theres very few restrictions, because Id bet money on it is NOT going to stay this way for long.
Good luck.

What kind of soldier do you get who can only score a 31 and only has completed 9th grade?
Someone with a higher likelyhood of retention. ASVAB score and civilian education levels don't make the Soldier. Whenever you are MOSQ you will see just as many people who score in the 90's, are fat bodies who can't pass PT, and are weak at skill level 1, basic Soldier skills.
Please do not make assumptions about Soldier quality until you are a Soldier yourself. Heck, why don't you save those opinions until you are even enlisted.

You get a soldier who would NEVER ask that question.

Hit a nerve I see. Wasn't my intention. Was an honest question. Some people are better suited for different aspects of everything in life. Takes all walks of life. If I were to never join it is still a valid question. I'd venture to guess that the military tracks this, so my question shouldn't seem so obnoxious.
I would also want to know what kind of soldier you get from someone who scores a 99 and his/hers APFT is over 300. What correlation is their between anykind of testing, civilian job and schooling, etc, and what kind of soldier they are.

Theres no correlation, everyone is different, theres good and bad soldiers with low scores and high scores. Your asvab score, your APFT and how far you went in school means nothing in any way shape or form.

Yeah, I scored super high on my ASVAB and the only correlation I see is that my ASVAB score directly correlates to my ability to solve 9th grade algebra problems sprinkled with a touch of sophomore geometry, vocabulary and paragraph comprehension.

I didn't know if to start a new thread about this subject or not. So i searched and found this gem, although it's a few months old.
My question is very similar to other people who have posted before.
I have a Uncharacterized discharge with an RE4 code in lieu of courth marshall.
I joined the Army in 06 and after two months of being enlisted, I decided to go AWOL. The reason being, I was put on medical hold due to an eye lasik surgery. At that time, I was moving furniture and was going to do so for the lenght of my medical hold )6-12 months). Sooooo I made the dumb mistake of going AWOL for 113 days. I know this kind of stuff happens to often on this forum so bare with me. As many others, I had recently turned 18 years old and didnt think how harsh the consequences would be. I am now 22/turning 23 in november and this has been haunting me since. I've talked to recruiters over the past couple of years but they have been un-helping to put it that way.
So i contacted a lawyer and said he could more than likely upgrade my re code in 3-6 months. Problem is, he is asking 10k! I dont have that kind of money laying around to go about this problem. Are there any alternatives? I know about submitting a dd293/4 (i think). I am going to a NG recruiter tomorrow to see if he wants to help me out filling that out. I know chances are slim to none but I can only hope. I didnt go to basic traning because of the medical hold if that matters.
Any advice in what to do in order to join the NG and then joining Active duty Army once again? I am willing to do whatever it takes.
Discharge- Uncharecterized
Seperation code- KFS
RE-4
I appreciate any answers. Bash or help away.
Thanks gentleman.

I'm not a recruiter, but have seen enough here to say......plan on a LONG haul. I have seen NAVY R-4 codes changed....not an Army R-4.
The NG is WAAAAAY over-manned right now, so don't expect any recruiter to want to waste his time on a 5 years fight.
Sorry to be blunt. If I were you, I wouldn't make any plans around coming back in.

Davis, I was wondering about something myself, I have been working to join the NG, however the pinky and ring finger on my right hand do not straighten all the way, most of the way, but not fully, I have read the description of what they are checking for at MEPS, and it says, they want to make it sure that you could do your duties as a soldier. Well, my fingers have been like this as long as I can remember, I can do anything someone asks of me pretty much, I know I can handle firearms and things of that nature with ease, I have done that all my life, the only thing I can't do properly, is a salute, have you ever dealt with this, and do you think my not being able to salute properly even though I can do anything else I am asked would stop me from being able to join?

Sgt Davis,
I am due to ship to basic in August. I am having foot surgery in two weeks. I have arthritis in my toe and need to have part of my bone cut out and posibly a metal plate installed. There is no cartiladge left. Will this be a disqualifier for me? If the plate is installed I may not have full range of bending my toe again.

Someone Resurected this post, I do not know when or why. But SGT Davis has not been on these forums for some time now.
Maybe he left recruiting, maybe he left the military, who knows, but SGT Davis is not here.

Maybe they needed to Google Sgt Davis, like the "other" thread advised to do first... Just messing with you.. Davis, last logged on in Feb 2010.
SSG Tischner, has a good thing going with helping with recruiting questions, he is very willing to help, but as mentioned, research your topic before you ask, so he, or another recruiter can give a more defined answer, if its a broad subject. Keep up the good work SSG.
