what type of service do guardsmen generally do, and can they volunteer for combat missions?

We serve both state and federal duty. In most cases if a guard unit in your state is deploying and they advertise your MOS as a shortage you can volunteer to go with that unit to assist them with their mission. We have had several soldiers go to Afghanistan with other units who needed additional people. Contact your unit and find out if any one is deploying and needs additional people.
