Unit assignment before and after basic

I am tring to figure out how recurits are assigned to various units. If the NCOIC of a particular unit invited me to enlist, BCT, AIT, and then join that unit, how does the process work?

How do enlistes drill with a unit in the time between enlisting and giong off to basic?

I have been told that I can join my states Marksmanship unit. It is a job, I am very much interested in, but how can I assure my wife and self that i will get assigned to that unit. It is non-MOS specific, so I can choose any MOS and then upon completetion of AIT, off to the marksmanship unit.

Can anyone give me some info on the process of being assigned to a unit?

Before I went to sign my contract my recruiter put in a reservation for the unit we decided on. When I got to MEPS to sign, the unit I'm am going to was already in the computer and is now in my contract.

Talk to your recruiter and get him to assign you to that unit in your contract - badda-bing, badda-boom.

Until I go to basic (in August) I am drilling with a RSP unit separate from my unit. Upon completion of BCT/AIT I will report to my assigned unit.
