My step-daughter has informed us that she is joining the National Guard, also that they will pay off her college loans from several years ago. She is mentally disabled, she has Borderline Personality Disorder. She has severe mood swings, can be violent, and does not think rationally. She has been in and out of mental hospitals, lived in group mental homes, been under supervised doctors care and supported by the state for the past 10 years. She has never held down a job longer than a few weeks. She did somehow manage to get an associates degree a few years ago as she can be book smart. She is 26 years old. She currently takes 1000 mg a depicote a day to control her anxiety attacks. She told us she is getting off her meds and joining the NG. We think she has lied about her mental condition. Will they check her background and medical records. She is currently doing community service for assaulting someone at an AA meeting. She lives in u pstate New York, near Albany. We don't want to turn her in but this will be a mistake for all concerned here.

If she has to remain on the medication, then no. I was taking a small dosage of Zoloft and couldn't join while on it. You have to be off meds for at least three months. It doesn't sound like she should attempt to get off of them. They ask you during the process if you have ever been hospitalized...I haven't so I don't know what happens when you answer yes. Might be a permanent disqualification. Call the local recruiter - they can give you more insight and information. All I know is what I had to go through.

Ok with that severe of a case I will not talk about the recruiter, but your daughter might not be telling him the entire truth, for one any mental disorder even as simple as ADD is unacceptable in the Army, second if she got charged with assualting someone and still hasnt complted her time back to the community she wont be getting in, 3rd someone in AA before joining the military is not good at all. But contact her recruiter, maybe there is something i am not aware of.
