Just a question, what things would cause a non-prior to enlist anything higher then a E-1.

I know college credits but what else?

My problem is I never went to college but I went to a few tech schools to become a licensed stationary engineer. None of the classes convert over at college credits. So why would some kid who takes pottery and gym at college be able to enlist as an E-2 or E-3 and then I get the short end of the stick?

From what I understand you can go E2 by working with your recruiter prior to basic, but that might just be an army thing. College credit helps out a lot, by having my Degree before I goto basic I will get E4. You can also refer a friend into the buddy system and go from E1 to E2 or E3 depending on other circumstances, the friend you recruited, etc... Hope this helps.

I enlisted in the Guard in 1984 as an E-3.I had a little less than 2 yrs. in college. You can enlist as an E-4 if you have enough schooling.

i'm not sure about everywhere but in my state if you were an eagle scout and you show the paperwork they'll put you in as an e-2. but in the long run it doesn't really matter, if you're an e-1 its only for a few months. after in ****** can get you to e-3 in some states after you have 2 recurits sign up. i'll be getting my e-3 right after my friend signs up and i've only been in a week.

I scored a 67 on my trial ASVAB test and I have 32 college credits as of now. If I score a 67 on my real ASVAB test along with my college credits where do I fall....an E-2 OR E-3. Thank you.

Successful completion of 1 year of JROTC will allow you to enlist in the pay grade of E2.

There are several things that you can do to get rank fast in the Army National Guard. For starters, you can enlist at a higher rank if you have college credits. If you have 24 credits or more, you can enlist as an E-2; 48 credits, you can enlist as an E-3; if you have a four year degree, you can enlist as an E-4. If you don't have college credits, you can enlist as an E-2 if you refer one of your friends to join, or E-3 if you refer two friends to join. Once you're in, you have to play by the STPA rules (Select, Train, Promote, Assign). This is a point system that determines who gets promoted first. There are several factors that determine how many points you have. Some of them, you can not really do much to change such as: Time in service, time in grade, awards, etc. However, there are several things that you can do to get more promotion points. These are:

Work on raising your PT score
Practice marksmanship on your own
Take college classes (college credits mean promotion points)
Take online coorspondance courses
Do you job and do it well (higher performance evaluation means more points)
Volunteer to go to military schools (each school give more points)

The more you put into your job, the more you will advance ahead of your peers.

Some units (and some MOS) have more options than others, but schools like Air Assault, Airborne, Mountain Warfare, Sapper, Instructor school, or anything else that is considered a resident course. Even reclassifying to another MOS throught a MOSQ course is considered a resident course and gives you promotion points.

NCOES schools (WLC, BNCOC, ANCOC) do not count toward promotion points.
