Your ARNG enlistment still remains no matter what else goes on in your civilian life. You will enlist for a period of time (usually six years of drilling, and two years of ready reserve time when you neither drill nor draw benefits), and when that is over you have no other obligation. There's nothing wrong with completing your contract and leaving service.

Make your recruiter earn their money on the 1st and 15th. That is all. ;)

You can browse the list of Army MOSes by going to the Army website:

http://www.goarmy.com/JobCatList.do?redirect=true

You'll have to check with a local recruiter to see what jobs are available in your state.

Remember... it's not necessarily what MOS's that are available in your state that is as important... but rather which MOS openings/slots there are in the TOE (Table of Organization & Equipment) at the particular unit you wish to join.

Now... for example... if you wish to be a 11B... and the closest unit to you is a aviation maintenance unit (sans slots for 11B's)... guess what... to be an 11B you're gonna have to do some monthly travelin'...

There's little chance of you signing up to be a Labratory(sic) specialist... and then being assigned to an Armor company... it doesn't work that way.

They don't just send you off to whatever MOS training you want & qualify for... without there being a slot to be filled in a particular unit.

Now... if you were heart-set on being a "Laboratory Tech"... the only place you'd be assigned would be at a unit that had slots (and an open one at that) for that MOS.

Hopefully that would be at your closest Armory... but good luck with that.

The situation then becomes as to whether or not that particular unit and/or certain MOSs within that unit... have a "mission" for the, ie: "Lab Tech", to perform... that's when you hear the stories about troops not working in their MOSs.

Trust me... if there is no blood/urine/whatever to be drawn and analysed... the "Lab Tech" will still be stuck in that slot... and the "Powers that Be" will find something with which to keep the "Lab Tech" occupied... be that details, soldier skills training, another "job"... or more details.

But just think... if there ever comes the time for that "mission" to be performed... the "Lab Tech" will be there to take care of it.

Keep in mind... it's Guaranteed Training... not necessarily a Guaranteed Job!

Also... just so y'all know... last time I checked... there weren't any Lab Tech... nor Air Traffic Controller slots... in the TOE of an Armor company.
