My main interest in joining the Army National Guard is for the training and to land a full time job with the ANG. How hard is it to get a job right after AIT?
I'm in Northern California if that helps. I hear the NG is being deployed to the border, somewhere around 5,000 troops. How hard is that job to get?
I'm 27, in good physical shape but my credit is poor. I scored decent on the ASVAB when I was 18 (somewhere around 70). I'd like to make the ANG a career if it's possible.

Welcome. :) You shouldn't have a problem finding a full time job after AIT. As far as the ASVAB goes..your gonna have to take it again. It's only good for 2 years. You live in Cali, so the chances of going to the border are good I think

Are you talking a AGR ( full time Guard) slot, or are you just talking about finding a job in general?..
There are lots of DOD Welfare slots avail ( That is what I call jobs for Guardsmen/Guardswomen who dont have a job on the outside and volunteer for every little thing they can find, but end up spending all of their time doing guard things and never get a chance to look for a real job on the outside. without becoming AGR.) They are important jobs to get done, but not something I would plan on a good paycheck for.
If you are looking for a steady paycheck wearing a military uniform, why not go active duty?...
Otherwise, Just like anything else in life... You need to go out and get it!;)

Yes I am more referring to the AGR spots. It's not my goal to join the NG and get shipped off after spending 6+ (training) months away from my son and fiancee. My goal would be to get a job with the Guard in California.

Your best bet in finding out what the chances are for an AGR job in your area is talking to a local recruiter. No one from outside of your state will be able to tell what the possibilities are for a job within your state. Some people will tell you to go to certain national web sites to find out what is open within your state. The only jobs that you will see posted nationwide from any state are those that are so critical that they haven't been able to fill from within. Usually, the states publish monthly announcements to their units with AGR and Tech jobs offerings that are not posted outside the state. If you're already talking to a recruiter let him know to be straight with you about possibilities for an AGR position. You will have to wait a minimum of 6 months before applying for an AGR job if you enlist for a bonus.
