Hello,

I am a 32 year-old mom, and am married to an Air National Guardsman with 16years of service.

I joined the Army in 12/92 when I was 20. My first date of active duty was 2/9/03. I completed Baisc Training and completed AIT. My MOS was 016T- Patriot Missle Crewmember. After AIT school was done, I was informed that my clearance had been delayed, and remained at Ft. Bliss (seemingly in training status). I spoke with my commander about being able to attend school while I waited for my clearance- which he said would take at least 8 months to complete- but he said that was not an option. Let me also say that I was not the best soldier. I had a little problem with self-discipline and running my mouth. I was counseled for "insubordination" several times, and USMJ action was threatened, but not taken. Not realizing the consequences of my request, I asked to be discharged. Long story short, I was discharged on 8/12/93. My DD-214 reads as follows:

Character of Service: "Uncharacterized"
Narrative Reason for Separation: "Entry Level Status"
Reentry Code: "3"

I am not certain why my MOS is ot listed on my DD-214, when I did graduate (I have the diploma) and did receive orders to my permanent duty station.

Regardless....I am a little older, a little wiser, have completed college, and am interested in joining the Army Guard. Am I eligible? Based upon my research, I believe a reentry code of 3 means I am eligible for reentry with a waiver. What type of waiver is this and how may I go about obtaining one?

Also, would I have to complete Basic Training again? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

You're eligible to enlist in the National Guard with an RE-3 and an "Uncharacterized" discharge. You will probably be assessed as a glossary non prior service since the initial contract was not fulfilled. Your enlistment will require an AG waiver (granted locally by your state's Adjutant General) which will be secured by the recruiter you contact once you start the enlistment process.

You have a unique situation that will require a few things to be done by the recruiter you contact (provided the state allows him/her to use the documentation as proof of completion of training). Not having your MOS listed on your DD 214 may cause you to have to go through Basic again. Since you asked, the reason your MOS was not listed on the DD 214 must be due to the security requirement (there are certain MOS's that will require you to have a security clearance in order to be considered MOSQ'ed - otherwise you're just MOS trained).

Once you contact a recruiter, make sure that you bring all documentation in your possession (training completion diplomas, orders, also your permanent duty station order if you have them) to have them used as proof documents for the completion of basic and AIT. If the state's allow a DD215 to be generated to reflect that you completed the training, it should prevent you from having to do basic again. Otherwise the DD 214 will be used as the source document for your prior service and since it doesn't reflect completion of AIT, you will have to attend basic again.

Contact a local recruiter and make sure that you explain your situation in detail. A good recruiter will do everything to try to enlist you without you having to do basic again.
