My recruiter and the folks at the NG Liaisons office told me my test score was great, better the scores of most who take the test. But I'm not sure I believe them. I scored a 68 and I have a feeling that is very average. Can someone give me an honest answer?

What are line scores? No one told me specifics about my results, just that I got a '68'.

Just to let you know the "score" they gave you is actually out of 99.

I finally got my results today. Seemed like forever. My recruiter called and said that I scored an 87. He said that it was good. Also got high line scores... don't really know what they are, but will be going to talk to him tomorrow after work. Is an 87 good?

Yea thats really good. I got an 89 and my GT score(which is most important i hear) was a 116 or something? All i know is it was 6 points higher than what the most advanced job requires. If u get a 110(or higher) on ur GT score then you can pretty much pick and choose w/e u want(although some jobs require other scores too but if u got over a 110 on ur gt i would assume u got pretty high on the other ones as well).
oh and some kid from my school got a 96...the idiots not going to college either, gonna work construction with his dad..

Nothings wrong with it but the kid really is a genious.. Like freakishly smart..he'd probably do society alot more good curing cancer or AIDS or making H2O powered cars a reality..hehe
And its more because of his reasoning, he said he doesn't really want to work construction his whole life but he doesn't want to go through the 'college hassel.' He could get through college easily..

My math isn't that great either, but I did fine. I think you have to prepare yourself mentally,... to some extent anyway. Like I said, my math and science were pretty dusty, but I managed a 130 GT and my lines were 112+. Just tell yourself you can do it.

A 68 is a very good score on the ASVAB. Some test sites have the ability to give scores immediately and some do not. Line scores are seperate from your overall score and are used to qualify you for specific career fields.

Since the score you got was weighted against thousands of others who was used for a control panel, anything above 50 is "above average". Additionally, 50 and above is required for a few things like College First.
I did well, Category I (98), but it doesn't seem to have much of an impact over how I am treated so far. I hear it does place me with the Egg Heads however.

The following information should provide some clarification about the ASVAB and all its components. The Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a group of 9 subtest that measures your ability in separate career areas and provides an indication of your academic ability. The subtest are given for the following aptitude areas: General Science (GS), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Word Knowledge (WK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Numerical Operations (NO), Electronic Information (EI), Auto and Shop Information (AS) and Mechanical Comprehension (MC). Four of these components (AR, WK, PC, and MK) comprise the AFQT - Armed Forces Qualification Test. The AFQT score determines whether or not you can enlist in the National Guard. The rest of the components are used in various combinations to determine your aptitude scores for 10 career path areas:
- CL - Clerical (WK+PC+AR+MK)
- CO- Combat (AR+CS+AS+MC)
- EL- Electronics (GS+AR+MK+EI)
- FA- Field Artillery (AR+CS+MK+MC)
- GM- General Maintenance (GS+AS+MK+EI)
- GT- General Technical (WK+PC+AR)
- MM- Mechanical Maintenance (NO+AS+MC+EI)
- OF- Operators and Food (WK+PC+NO+AS+MC)
- SC- Surveillance and Communications (WK+PC+AR+AS+MC)
- ST- Skilled Technical (GS+WK+PC+MK+MC)
The scores on these components determine what job specialties are best suited for your current knowledge and aptitude base. These specialties will be the specialties offered to you for enlistment. These component scores are also known as the line scores.
To qualify and be eligible to join the National Guard you need an AFQT score of 31 or higher. This will allow you to join with the basic package of bonuses and incentives which we can be discussed with a local recruiter. A score of 50 or higher on the AFQT, would allow you to qualify for all incentives and bonuses anyone eligible can receive. There are 5 test score categories (CAT) which in combination with your education, determine what you get on your enlistment. The CAT's are:
CAT I - (AFQT 93-100)
CAT II - (AFQT 65-92)
CAT IIIA (AFQT 50-64)
CAT IIIB (AFQT 31-49)
CAT IVA (AFQT 16-30)
CAT IVA applicants can only enlist when and if the window for CAT4's opens and MEPS receives a control number for their enlistment. These applicants are not authorized the 5 point line score waiver, cannot enlist if they require a moral waiver for offenses that are misdemeanors or above, and are not authorized to receive any of the bonuses listed in the SRIP (Selected Reserve Incentive Program).

I took the ASVAB in 11th grade. It was optional for all juniors to take it, but just about all students took it in order to get out of class.
I took it because I wanted to see how well I could do, and I kind of regret it. I scored a 99. As most of you know that's the highest you can get. You may be wondering why I regret taking the test, and I'll explain why.
A few days after receiving my scores, I was getting phone calls from recruiters at home. This wasn't a problem to me at first, I simply told them I wasn't interested at the time. Then I would get called out of class at school because recruiters would be calling the school trying to set up a meeting time with me. Still not interested. Then the phone calls at work and then on my cell phone were the breaking points.
About the time I started receiving calls on my cell phone from different branches of the military, I started getting information from the service academies. I attended Summer Seminar at USNA the summer before my senior year, just to see if I would like it. I decided the military lifestyle wasn't for me. Don't get me wrong, I support everyone who serves in our military. I believe they do a great job and they have my support 100%. But when recruiters push on for someone to join who isn't willing, it's downright annoying. So if anyone on here is a recruiter, no offense, but when someone tells you no, don't push the issue. I understand this may have been circumstantial, but it was annoying nonetheless.

When I was in High School (20 years ago) the same thing happened to me. As soon as they saw my perfect score at the time they hounded me. I was going to go reg. army and my 2 older brothers had gone in the previous 2 years so they thought no prob. And it would have been except for the hounding it was just enough to push me away. I went on with life but the military was always at the back of my mind and when I heard that the age had gone up I contacted a recruiter for the guard. I told him not to hound me and he didn't - he worked with me and it was great. Took the asvab again but only got a 97 this time but it had been a while (2 decades) since I went to school so I guess it's ok.

Your score was better than average. The average is around 50 or so. Dont get down about your score. Besides it wont mater once you are in anyway. The scores you need to worry about are your GT scores wich you will learn about later. And if you dont like what they are you cant have them raised.

Yeah, you can. You have to wait a few days I think, then after you take it again you have to wait at least six months. Although I might be wrong.
I got an 88.
From what I was told, It's based off a percentile, so basically you did better than 68% of the other people who took it, and all that score does is say if you're allowed to enlist (and if you get a high score, you do tend to get calls from what I've been told. I just got a bunch of mail) and something to do with bonuses, so the only thing that really matters are your line scores that AbnMnt posted.

My recruiter told me the national average is in the 40's or 50's. My first and only time taking it I got a 91 overall and my lowest line score was a 127 so I was thrilled! If I recall correctly, after your first time taking it you have to wait 30 days to take it a second. Same for the second; take it wait 30 more days. On your third time, if you do not score high enough or want to retake it again for one reason or another, you need to wait 6 months.
GutshotStraight
January 16th, 2008, 01:39 AM
I agree with PFC Lowe- You must wait 30 days to retest.
I took it today and got: AFQT 88
Line scores were between 123 and 128 (GT was 128) so I guess I can research more MOS's- LOL I did not think I would do very well and left MEPS almost sick because I thought I had tanked it.
There are some sweet jobs for GT over 110 and ST over 105 or 110

Oh the ASVAB. Gosh, I kinda wish I had studied a little harder. I did embarassing for a soon to be college graduate. I was never good at those kinds of tests . .. . tests in general. In performance as in having to show someone that I can do something, I do wonderful. But you ask me to write something down, and forget about it.
I didn't do well enough to qualify for ocs (i had a GT of 107). . . but that's ok, because i wanted to go enlisted first anyway.
will they let me retake it when i do apply?

To be honest I am not sure how your scores above correlate to the actual ASVAB. Have you considered just taking it? If you do not score as well as you'd like you can retake it...
I tried some short sample tests online but the scoring and everything was MUCH different than the actual exam.
I bought the McGraw-Hill ASVAB guide that has a DVD as well- You can take up to 5 full length exams and it shows your strengths, weaknesses and improvement.
Also, the "ASVAB for Dummies" seems to be the best, at least from what I hear.
Keep us posted!
