i was a oringinally when i came out of mos school rifleman in the marines but got put into a communications unit. I had no idea what i was doing and got demoted from an e-3 to an e-1 because of it. i asked for a transfer to the national guard or army reserve so i could join a rifleman unit but that just made things worse. the whole unit found out and treated me like the black sheep. and now i am getting a other than honorable discharge. is it possible to get a waiver and join the national guard. all i want to do is be apart of a rifle company where i know what i am doing and do my time. thanks for the reply

Yes, you can get a waiver....you'll have to wait I think 90 days before you can re-up. But once that time is done...you good to go.....TRUST me, from experence.

I was discharged from the Marines a few years back, and recently have been trying to get back in the National Guard. A recruiter got me a waiver for my RE code, but said Id have to get me OTH discharge changed before I could get back in. Is this true or does he just not want to take the time? Please answer or email.

You'll have to get the OTH changed. The most recent enlistment criteria manual (ECM) does not authorizes waivers for OTH.

I'm calling BS on this post. As a school trained 03**, you wouldn't be in a comm. unit. If for some fluke you actually were assigned to a comm. unit then they wouldn't hold your lack of knowledge against you as long as you were willing to learn. But, based on the spelling and sentence construction of your post maybe your just a little kid.

hey hardcharger, fomer Marine Sergeant here, did you mean that you thought you signed up for 0311 and actually got comm?
The Corps can put you were they want you so a grunt in a comm unit is not unheard of, esp if the Marine is lackluster or fails MOS school. working party, etc.
Bottomline is the OTH is from an admin board I am presuming?
Try a BCNR appeal and dont hold your breath, yet all things worth wanting take effort. Good luck. I filed a BCNR appeal so if you need help PM me.
you'll have to upgrade the discharge and then apply for a waiver for enlistment into the ARNG.

Hey OTH,
I am 11BP with an OTH re-up code of 2 year wait. I got out in 1989 and this year looked at joining the national guard. My recruiter said waiver would not be an issue.... I wanted to be sure so I asked the SSGT to ask the OIC at HQ who said the recode is the big issue now and not the type of discharge, assuming it is not for anything crime related. I am fighting overweight issue now but in 50 lbs. I am back home/in.
Good luck and go see a recruiter! Have them start running your information and be upfront about everything!!!
