I guess it depends on how much running and how sore. If you are just starting, remember you don't have to do it all right away. Start slowly. Depending on your baseline condition start with something that isn't too hard (1/2 mile, a mile, 2 miles, 3... based on what you can do with only a little strain at your current level- you should challenge yourself but not feel like you are going to keel over) and combine running and walking. When it gets easier, move up to more running and less walking and/or more distance. Eventually you'll be able to run the whole distance and for the time/distance you need for basic without too much trouble. Another issue for soreness is how often do you run? If you are running 2 days back to back, maybe do one day as strength training and the next as cardio. Don't run 2 days in a row. That will give your muscles a chance to recover between sessions and maybe you won't be as sore. You may also want to look at your pre/post-run stretching routine. Short-term fix: Ben *** or some other linement will definately make your muscles feel better once they start to get sore- but don't just use that and ignore it as too much soreness may be a signal that something is seriously wrong.

i can run a pretty solid mile but after that it starts getting hard. also, my track coach told me not to walk if i can help it because then i train my body to walk when i am tired.

Your coach is right, don't walk. It becomes a hard habit to ****. I recommend warming up with one slow half mile, then stop for 30 seconds, catch your breath while doing simple streches. After 30 sec. run your one mile timed. Don't stop running once you have completed that mile, but rather run much slower (run slower for a half mile to a mile, what ever you are most comfortable with)

Just listen to what your body is telling you (sounds silly, I know. But I'm able to run 25 miles a week simply by judging how I feel). Train smart, work hard.

I don't think I agree with your track coach. Right before you get to the point of your run where you can't run any farther without keeling over, it's ok to walk. Just catch your breath ASAP, and continue running. Keep doing that until you've gone for aprox. 20 minutes or 2 miles, whatever comes first. It's better to have to walk a little then to not go as far. Eventually you'll be able to run the whole thing without walking at all. It worked for me. I started out not being able to run even 1/4 of a mile and now I run between 2 and 3 miles three or four times a week.

Remember though, only walk when you really have to. Your mind will quit long before your body has to.

Good luck.

I agree with sp.ranger. You train yourself to keep going and if that means walking for a short amount of time it's alot better than just stopping to catch your breath.
