I haven't been able to find the answer to this yet. Is it possible to do the SMP in your sophomore year of school, even though you don't contract ROTC until your junior year? I have heard this is true, however, I want to validate this.

No. An SMP is a contracted ROTC cadet who is simultaneously an enlisted Soldier in the Army National Guard. You are still welcome to participate in ROTC -- that's not a problem at all -- but you won't be an SMP. You'll be an ROTC cadet who happens to be in the Guard.

Reference: NGR 600-100 chapter 13.

Because of the latency of postings, I needed to make a second message.

I want to clarify my previous post. It is possible to contract as an MSII, and thus be an SMP cadet. If you earn a three year ARNG ROTC scholarship, you must contract in order to draw the scholarship. Also, your ROTC program will allow a certain percentage of non-scholarship MSII cadets to contract. Thus, if you are a contracted MSII, you will be an SMP in the Guard.
