The question i have is do u have to be with a state guard unit for a certain amount of time before u can get your retirement from that state? I was in a unit where one soldier was getting close to 20 and he said that he had to have 6 yrs in that state guard unit before they would permit him his retirement in that state.
If u have 18 yrs, and join in a certain state do u have a minimum time before u can be eligable for that state to pay military retirement

Few states have a state-specific retirement (that is, a retirement plan funded by the state and not the federal government). I know Florida does, as an example. This question should fall to your local recruiter, who probably will need to check with his boss for greater detail.

If you have 20 years of service you will be sent a letter of eligibility and then you can retire. You can have a combination service to equal 20 years. You could have served 4 years in the Navy, Joined the Naval Reserve for 6 years, then Joined the Air National Guard in Vermont for 3 years, then the New Hampshire Army National Guard for 5 years, and finally ended transfering to the Maine Army National Guard for your last 2 years. 20 years of service is 20 years of service no matter how you get it. Of course more Active Duty time gives you a higher retirement rate, but that's another topic.

Call CW2(P) Mark Perry at the Maine Headquarters and ask about any retirement issues that the state may have but the 6 year requirement was removed in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) 05. Be careful of how you are throwing around the retirement part because you become a gray area retiree after 20 years eligibility and applying but you do not receive money and retired status until age 60. You could still be recalled before that age. Talk to and monitor your RPAM statement to ensure that you are getting and maintaining your points, there is a minimum per year to make a good year. If you are doing all your drills and A.T. there should not be any problem.
