my husband has been in basic training for the past couple of months. we're new to this, and don't really know how this works... my brother was in the navy and just got out, and he said that the military doesn't mail the W2s. what do i do to get my husband's W2?

Usually they are available online at the end of January at https://mypay.dfas.mil. He can print them out from that site. It's much quicker than through the mail.

He probably wants to check out that site right now, because it also shows your pay for the past six months, as well as some other interesting features.

Your husband has direct deposit and a 'My Pay' account that enables him to look at his Leave and Earnings Statements (LES). His W2 is also available at 'My Pay.' You need to get his personal identification number (PIN) and password.
