I am interested in joining but I believe there might be a hurdle to overcome. I VOLUNTARILY entered an outpatient program for alcohol one year ago. I completed the program and have been completely sober for one year. On the front this seems bad but there is some reasoning. I was never a problem drinker, I was your typical weekend warrior. I always succeeded in my career, loved my family, took care of my responsibilities. I never got a DUI, was never arrested, etc. I entered the program because I did not want to follow in the path of my father who is a total drunk. Having gone through Alanon (support group for families), I realize that there is a lot to addiction and addictive personalities. I only entered the rehab because (A) I wanted to fully understand why I liked drinking and why my entire family is so hooked on alcohol and (B) I had insurance so why not use the service I pay for. Any thoughts?

Attending rehab does not automatically disqualify you from serving. You will need to disclose this to your recruiter, who will need to submit some documentation to MEPS in a pre-eval. The documents he or she need are: a statement from you stating why you voluntarily enrolled in the program, and all coulseling records from the counselor. It would also be good to have the counselor write a letter of recommendation that states that you enrolled in the program as a preventative measure, that you have no history of addiction that has interfered with work or any aspect of your personal life, and that he or she sees no reason that you can not serve in any capacity in the military.
