Is it possible to get a direct appointment as a warrant officer for someone without prior service, outside of an aviator MOS? I have a PhD in computer science, so I am hoping that will qualify me for MOS 251A (Information Systems Technician).

If Im not mistaken 4 years of school would allow you to apply to any branch as an officer. Talk to an Officer Candidate School (OCS) recuiter with which ever service your looking at joining.

There is no provision for direct appointment as a Warrant Officer. You can, however, enlist for the purpose of Warrant Officer Candidate School (this is also called the "09W" option).
Speak to your state's Warrant Officer Strength Manager, or Command Chief Warrant Officer.

I am 39, prior service and currently working as a government contractor. I am completely cleared and have an extensive resume' of senior positions with the intelligence community. I have been pursuaded to contact you with the intentions of seeking a direct commision in the US Army MI corp. I have been assured the support of two general officers should this option be viable. I am ready to commit to any and all actions to make this happed ASAP. If I am in eligable I am equally open to the warrant officer program as a 350D (former 96D20s9, BA).

OK, thanks for the info. Actually, I am also considering WOCS followed by WOBC (WO basic course) for 251A. I was just hoping there was the equivalent of a direct commission for technical officers to streamline the process.

Direct appointment isn't necessarily any faster than WOCS or even OCS. At least with WOCS you know when it will end, and you're more in control of your own destiny.
