I am 35 years hold and enlisted in April and ship to basic in July with 09S (OCS candidate) MOS. While exploring military career fields, I have decided that AMEDD as an environmental science officer is the best fit for me. I have a BS in biology, MS management, MBA and was working on MS in chemical engineering. I was a paramedic with over 7 years of medical experience and the last 6 years in the environmental field. I would like to what qualifications are needed for a direct commission and what documents are neeeded to process before I ship to BT. I don't want to worry about this while in basic.

For best results, work with your state's AMEDD Recruiter. If I knew your state, I could tell you the individual's name and number, but your current Recruiter should know. Smaller states may not have a dedicated AMEDD Recruiter, but combine that job with the Officer Strength Manager.

Check out AR 135-100 (APPOINTMENT OF COMMISSIONED AND WARRANT OFFICERS OF THE ARMY):
http://www.apd.army.mil/pdffiles/r135_100.pdf

This describes the application process for direct commissions in detail and includes pointers to documents discussing requirements for particular specialties. In particular, for AMEDD it mentions AR 135-101 (APPOINTMENT OF RESERVE COMMISSIONED OFFICERS FOR ASSIGNMENT TO ARMY MEDICAL DEPARTMENT BRANCHES):
http://www.apd.army.mil/pdffiles/r135_101.pdf

(Both of these are specifically or the Reserve Components, as series 135 of the Army regulations is for the Army National Guard and Reserve).

Best,
Tom
