I am also 35 and will be joining by the end of the year. At first I too thought I was too old, but you are never too old, if you are willing to put in the effort then it is worth it. Good luck to all of us.

Im really up in the air right now on re-joining, I already put in time with California during the riots and earthquakes, then moved to Washington and joined up here. I have been out 6 years now, and most of my friends have already been to Iraq. I was a Medic in a Mort. Plt. but now am 33 and would be going in as a E-4 with a lot of younger kids that have Combat patches, and CMB's. I have been looking at a Aviation unit At Ft Lewis but I just dont know about that yet, I tried to Re-up before my friends got deploy'd but the recruiter kinda lost me in the hurry up of getting ready to deploy. I make great money on the outside ( Im in Emergency Services) and can afford to be able to play now so that is not an issue, my wife wants me to go back in because she knows how much I miss it. The recruiters around here only seem to want to fill slots for their units, and dont really want to put out any extra on a guy that will have to drive 2 hours to goto another unit that has nothing to do with their unit ( Im not going into an ENG Bt):D and my old unit is no longer on this side of the state. I will try and contact a Recruiter down south, but getting the time on a weekday is not that easy right now.

Anyway Good luck to you all that have joined and rejoined up! Us old Farts still have lots of miles left in us.;)

Thank you guys for the hope. I am 27 leaving for BCT on August 9th for 11B. I have no prior service. I am real excited and can't figure out why I didn't join when I was 18 like my father told me too. I thought I was too old. But I guess it really does not matter all that much.

49, been out of the AF for 20 years. Sworn in 30JUN06 to the Georgia Guard. 31B The younger guys will give you a different perspective. Your patches will come.

Age is a relative thing! Remember, age and trachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.

I enjoyed reading this discusion. I'm a 31 year old female, (OK, really close to 32 hehee) no prior service. 5' 2'' 100 pounds but havent worked out in 13 years. Yikes! Although when I was working out I'm the type to work extra hard and get everything I can out of it. Body type that builds muscle pretty easily. I dont even think the PT part of it is the biggest decision. Undecided on joining yet. Wish I had my decision by now. Went to a drill and checked it out. Have been reseaching and asking my Recruiter (he is awesome, imfomative) tons of questions. Feel well informed in many aspects so far. I'd have to say on a scale of 1-100, 100 being a yes, i'm at about a 75 on joining.

I Enjoy reading the discussions, congrats to ya'll!

Been a while since I have been here at the boards but just wanted to give a little morale boost for you older folks that are thinking of joining. Through hard work ( mental and physical ) you can do whatever you want. So far I have lost 25 pounds and am able to pass the pt test for my age group by far. I am trying to get into an LRS unit here so I still have a ways to go yet. Been lifting weights and running for the last 2 1/2 months and me and my buddies do ruck marches on the weekends, I am up to 65 pound ruck walking a 4 minute mile, we usually go for 5-6 miles. Great excercise btw.

Best of luck to all of you :)

If you are prior army with a different MOS the re-class school is 2 weeks long. If you are coming from another branch of military you will have to go to the warrior transition course. If you have never been in you will have to attend basic and AIT.

Walking a 4 minute mile with a 65 lb ruck? Are you trying out for SOFD? I hear ya, but in all seriousness, do you mean 14 min/mile?

Hey guys, I'm going back in, and I'm 46! Got out years back, and regretted it ever since. I've got an established career and family, who are a little concerned about my mental stability at this point, but sometimes you just gotta do what you've gotta do!

2 years in Nam (PBR Boats), got recalled for the first Desert Storm. At 57 it's time to turn it over to you younger MEN. Have less that a year til retirement. (To you we pass the torch. Be yours to hold it high). It will be greatly missed. The places I've been, the things I've seen. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Such are the memories. Good Luck.

Well I had my first drill with my new unit man, just a little diffrent from 10 years ago ,A little more relaxed even for a guard unit .I will wait and see the unit is only a year old and going through the growing pains.( I hope)
But still theres nothing like it ,serving your country /state. did notice the younger guys lack of military bearing for instence standing at attention infront of a captin recieving a award with a coke bottle in your hand.Or one soldier recieved his award and just turned around and left no salute or anything.I must be old school but thats just wrong but I'll work on the younger guys .

I also just had my first drill. I have to agree there are somethings I'd was not crazy about. I am foodservice so we had KP's and they stood around talking on their cell phones or wandering off. I did not say too much for a few reasons 1. being new even though I am a SGT. 2. Do not have uniforms yet so did not feel to cool about giving too many orders.

All in all though it went goo. The folks in the mess accepted me and I got right in and worked. It is amazing how quickly after 16 years it all came back. Just hope I can get uniforms before next drill

hey buckethead, im also prior service. I couldnt imagine not saluting an officer! if my 1st sgt saw me not salute our captain or any other officer he would have beat the tar out of me. Im a former Marine, and i havent yet gone to my first drill, and i am a little worried on how the military protocol will be observed in a guard unit. any other insight?

I'm 35 and have no prior military experience. Do sane people at this age with no experience enlist? Am I really nuts in thinking this?

I've never shaken the feeling that I should have joined a long time ago. I'm not sure how much someone like me can help, but I feel like this country needs all the help it can get.

I'm in fairly good shape, fairly intelligent, and haven't committed any crimes except for the occasional traffic violation. I have a family and am afraid I they would disown me... but nonetheless, here I am wondering...

I'm 32 and enlisted this past year for what seems like some of the simular reasons you are contemplating. I know too many people that have done multiple tours for long durations. I hope to lessen the load. One thing that made me decide, was the 360 days the Guard gives you until you have to ship for your basic/ait obligation. I knew I was in decent shape, but I wanted to be around others and see exactly where I stood. You attend RSP drill until you leave for basic. RSP has recruits that have finished basic, but not completed AIT yet. They are very good resources. I gave myself almost a year before I ship. Now I know exactly where I stand and what I need to do to be at my best before I ship. Most RSP drills are run as a mini basic weekend. You learn alot and I think its helpful to take advantage of it before you leave. I know this means I will not be deployable for over a year, but I also believe it will allow me to be at my best and best able to help our County.

I'm with you brother- been out myself after about 17 years, always regretted the day I ETS'd, and missed the cameradrie, and the sense of pride that being a soldier gave me.

I'm no spring chicken, 46 y/o, but have worked my *** off to go back in. I've got my physical at Miami MEPPS tommorow a.m., so we'll see what happens. I've been working out, running like crazy, and feel better now than I did when I was 25 (lost almost 60 lbs. to make weight/tape) Wife's not to keen on the prospect, but I've got to do what I've got to do! Good luck to all of you guys joining.

Believe me, your country and state could certainly do well to have you! Take care
