Im currently a college freshman in ROTC, ive been thinking about enlisting in the Guard until I finish college and commision, but I have some questions.

1. When I commision I want to get active Army, will the Guard interfere with that and will it decrease my chances of getting active? This is my biggest concern.

2. I want to enlist as a 91W but I heard AIT is 16 weeks so would I be able to do this if im in college? or would I have to pick an MOS with a shorter AIT?

3. If I enlisted what rank would I enter with since im enrolled in college?

4. How much would I get payed monthly?

5. What happens if you are out of the country for longer than a month and cant attend the monthly drill?

Hopefully this helps me decide if enlisting is the right choice

1, im not sure if officers can tranfer as easy as elisted solders. however it is relitivaly easy for an enlisted Guardsmen to transfer from Guard to active.

2, AIT is AIT im not sure if you can wavier or not. i dont think you can. so 16 weeks is 16weeks, no exceptions.

3, if you enter as an ROTC cadet that will be you rank, Cadet. thare will be a circle where your rank is, you will often be refered to as caDOT. you will be treated as an officer, however, dont try ordering your first sargeant around.

4, the paygrade for a cadet is that of an e-5

5, skipping a drill is called a SUTA. bassically you make up the time before you skip the drill. if i want January off than i would let my chain of command know and come in durring the week in dec. (or what ever month earlier than Jan.) for a couple 9-5 days and that would be that.

I have never been involved in rotc and have never been an officer. but that is my enlisted piont of veiw. i didnt mean to emply that cadets dont get any respect i simple ment to say that thay are "officers in training" and are generally treated as such by NCO's and higher.

Be careful what financial incentives you take from the Guard while in ROTC, so you don't obligate yourself in a manner you don't plan to fulfill. For example, don't take an enlistment bonus, state tuition assistance, Guard ROTC scholarship, or GI Bill Kicker. These all have Guard-specific service obligations.
You can either take a semester off, or get a shorter MOS (Infantry, Field Artillery Cannoneer, Combat Engineer).

I have nothing to add to the other questions that the other response hasn't already addressed.

The program you are wondering about is the SMP program. One that im curently working towards doing. I don't know if it varies from guard to guard, but i was told you can take all of the benifits however once you contract with ROTC they are done with. You still get drill pay and Tuition asistance but if you are eligible for the 20k bonus you only half of what you were promised.
here is a link to the benifits and a summary of what SMP is. http://www.tntech.edu/armyrotc/SMP.html
