Hey Bros

Im trying to figure out the differences between the National Guard and the Guard Reserves. I need info so that I can make an informed disiscion. I have looked all over the net different states have there own Guard, are all those individual state Guard branches a direct off shoot of the Army Guard and is it the same for the reserves? I am a little confused so far. I recently spoke to an Army Recruiter who was kind of down on the reserves in contrast to full enlistment in the Guard. He also told me that they did not deal with the National Guard that they are governed by there own state but they do recruiting/enlisting for the Guard????????? Can someone please help a Bro out, in understanding the differences. Thanks Bros I appreciate your time, info and patience.

Are you talking about the National Guard vs. Army Reserves?

The Army Reserve is a federally run organization. They are not tied to any one state. This means that they can be reorganized and moved to other states depending on mission requirements.

The Army National Guard has a dual mission: a state mission and a federal mission. The Governor of each state is the commander-in-chief of the National Guard of his or her state. He or she can activate units within the state. The President has the authority to call National Guard units to active duty and then he becomes the commander-in-chief.

If I am reading your post right you said an active duty recruiter said that they can enlist you into the Army National Guard. This is not correct only a Army National Guard recruiter can enlist you into the guard. That is common with the active duty recruiter to say and then get you to change to USA or USAR(at least in my area). So my advice is to call 1800goguard to get with a ARNG recruiter so you can get the right info on all the Army components

The Guard is a state and a federal force, whereas the USAR is a federal force only. Also, the Guard is more like the active Army in force structure and balance, whereas the USAR has no combat arms units.
