Hey, I've heard mixed stories, about how military pay during basic isn't taxed? is this true? or not...and if not, as an E-1, how much can I expect to clear as I have bills at home whether I'm there or not...truck payment, trailor payment, etc...

Thanks,
Chris

Those personnel who are serving overseas in a declared combat zone are not taxed, this does not apply to people here in the Continental United States. While in an active duty training status you will recieve your base pay minus your federal and state taxes (the state refelcts your state of legal residence).

As a rule, plan on 30-35% for taxes for your planning. This may be high in some situations, low in others, but since you are planning at this point it is better to err on the high side.

You will have deductions for taxes, Servicemans Group Life Insurance and Trauma Insurance. You can expect that during basic you will have little need beyond the purchase of personal hygiene items, and a few occasional other things. Talk to your recruiter to see if he/she has any info on what previous recruits from your state may have said about thier pay while in training.

I just know a little bit about a lot of things :) One thing I used as a guide when I was first in, was to learn the process for getting things done - from operational planning to admin - and I was an Infantryman :) So much for just walking around draggin my knuckles and eating snakes :)

I have been fortunate to have had access to a variety of experiences in the military, and I would like to think that by being part of this forum any correct and positive information I have would be able to help someone - that is part of being a soldier - helping other soldiers.
