I am married with kids have a two year degree and make over 50k per year would it be foolish of me to join reserves? My dad was a Marine and other family servied but I never did? I feel I should have earlier in the live but believe I am going into a mid life here? I am worried when I am in Boot camp can we afford the loss of pay? And how much would I recieve? Worth it? the pay? the pride? Open for ideas and comments.....

I' am in a simular situation. 37yrs old, twin boys 9yrs, 45k management position. I have always wanted to be in the U.S. Military, but have let other things get in the way, let others decide for me. I understand your worries about the financial matter when you are gone. Check into the pay schedule for the Guard, if your wife works perhaps you can make a budget. You mays also get a Housing allowance. I also took out a small loan that I deposited into my checking acct. to help cover bills- make the loan payments through BCT and AIT then pay it off with some of your Enlistment Bonus. Sit down get creative, your will think of a way to make this happen.
Good Luck

Sir, I will be totally honest with you, Ive been in the military for awhile now, and its nice if you want to pay for college, or you try everything else and need the extra support for you family. For someone with your salary and age, it wouldnt be worth it for you to go guard or reserves. A. because your not making that much more salary or benefits wise to equal your current pay. B. The bonus is the only thing that would be worth the hassle to go through the mental and physcial struggles of basic. And The hardship of war with a full family might take it toll harder say if you were single and family-less, (less to loose). If your trying to fufill the itch -try civil air patorl (no contract needed and you get some military experience) sit down with a finicial anyalsis before a recruiter, because its there job to recruite you first and get you rich second if at all. Sure you will get the bonus and great shape brother hood, but starting at a e-4 assuming you have a college degree, pay is not going to cut if for your and your family finicially.

In any component you are pretty much likely to be deployed then you dont keep any luxuries. You cant drink, have "relations" , you do get paid alot of money you cant spend it, for at least 15 months in country. And the gentlemen has a family at 40. Anyway you look at it poster its an 8 year commitment you need to constantly keep up physcially mental, the once a month thing is convient, it does bring pride to you, and your friends, you get paid "gas money" for drill and you do get a nice bonus, so in the end its your call I dont mean to sound like a dream killer, but everyone going to sell you the woo ha sweat talk im just keeping it real, no one did that for me and I got some lumps here and there from it so I hope my good with bad helps you weigh your descion more heavy.
