Military Police officers in the National Guard typically have two roles. Once is a garrison MP, and the other is a field MP. Garrison MPs guard restricted areas, conduct patrols of the base, deal with any security issues on the base, traffic control, riot control, and enforce parking and speeding on the installation. Field MPs conduct patrols on and off the installation, when deployed, they conduct combat patrols, provide security for convoys, and work along side the infantry. MPs may be used for either or both tasks depending on the mission of the unit. They will be trained to use rifles, pistols, OC (pepper spray) expandable batons, handcuffs, non-lethal weapons (pepper-ball guns, tazers, stun guns, bean bag rounds, etc.) Basically, any task that a police officer is trained in. There is a fair amount of paperwork and desk work, and some MP units do have SWAT-like units that specialize in close-quarter combat and urban warfare. The only way to know for sure what the MP units in your state do, is to have your recruiter visit them and ask them what the unit does.
