Hello all, as stated in the title I have a question about deployments/activations during disaster or emergency situations. I am about to Enlist in the national guard, stationed at a location approximately 3 hours drive time from my house. Its so far from my residence due to my remote location and then furthered by the availability of my desired MOS.

Anyway, with this much of a delay would there be an issue if my unit is ever activated in an emergency? As in, if there is a situation where my unit has to rapidly deploy and I am 3 hours out, is this going to cause me to get in some kind of trouble? I am not at all familiar with how this works, or how the national guard works during such situations.

Thank you in advance for your replies!

You won't have any problems with mob's. Soldiers who commute, usually have more of a problem just showing up to drill.

"Rapid" mobs, are usually within a week or two with little to no notice, not within a day. You really don't see them anymore.

I live 150 miles from where I drill. It takes me 2 hours in good traffic to get to drill. Some soldiers have to drive 4+ hours to get there. Like CPT said, the biggest problems with long commutes is getting soldiers to show up. In the event of an emergency where the NG is called in the full time staff blows up the phones to get as many people in to the armory as quickly as they can. They know where you live so if you are 2 hours away that is factored into the ETA. It's not like you see in the movies where sirens are going off the instant a disaster happens and then "poof" the national guard is right there. It takes time to organize and plan. Leadership gets the WARNO, starts planning OPORDS, meanwhile the full time staff is trying to round everybody up and the NCO's are getting everyone organized, PCC's, PCI's etc. Being a 2-3 hour drive away is not a big deal.

For the Iowa Floods of 2008, I was called somewhere between 12-18 hrs before I had to show up to formation.
