I am a newly commissioned 2LT as a Chaplain Candidate in the MS ARNG. I recently went to purchase my first set of ACU's and was a bit overwhelmed. The pants, coat, and patrol cap were easy to select other items such as socks and undershirts had too many options. What are your recommendations for socks and undershirts? Are the higher dollar socks (like Under Armour) really that much better? And are the moisture control shirts really that much better than just a plain cotton undershirt?
I'm totally new to the ARNG and would appreciate any and all help or advice. Thanks in advance.

IMHO yes, but it really depends on your mission. If you are going to be desk bound, why spend the money. If you are going to be working outside in the MS heat they are well worth it.

Spend the extra money on thick socks lined with silver. Mine have lasted 2 years, although I haven't used them in boots for a while. They keep feet cushioned and cool during the summer and warm in the winter. And there is virtually no odor.

In my opinion, shirts are shirts. all the t-shirts are some sort of moisture wicking now, so that doesn't really matter. However, YES YES YES spend the money on socks. As everyone else on this site knows, your feet are your moneymaker in the military. You better spend the money on socks and some after market boots to make sure you keep blisters and hot spots to a minimum.

The 3 pair of socks that are "army issue" come in sizes SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE, XLARGE (i think that high).
I always get the small size because what is the point of having the socks go all the way up to your knees!? Too hot for me. Small leave me about 3 inches above my boot anyways.

Wow you guys are retarded. That being said I have never been to Pickett. We have had two AT's scheduled there in my almost 8 years in the Guard. Both of them got changed to Indiantown Gap. Pickett couldn't handle our training needs apparently! And good old Fort Drum pissed off our TAG a few years back so we don't go there any longer! LOL

Okay, so I went to the Walmart and I'll be ****** if it wasnt a WalMart. Screaming children, overweight americans and cheap quality merchandise. I was there for a whole 20 minutes before I had to escape.

Welcome to the Chaplain Candidate program. I'm at CH-BOLC right now if you have any questions.
For CH-BOLC you will need 4 sets of ACUs. You only need one now, but steadily buy some more.
You can buy any socks that are the right color.
For CHBOLC CIMT you will need the standard issue boot, after CIMT you can have the other style, what is it tennis shoe style?
You'll need two pair for CH-BOLC.
For your ACU's i suggest getting mutliple patches of everything so you don't have to switch patches.
Depending on your state, you will need to get a Patrol Cap, with 2LT patch on it. Get it sown on not the pin type.
You will need to get a beret too, with the 2LT bar to put on it.
Brown undershirts. Belts.
I like foot powder makes my feet feel good.
You need to get Id tags made. You need to get your military ID also.
If you need it you can get a Military Star Card, and charge on credit your items. I have one but don't use it. Kinda worthless in my opion.
THe first day you have the card you get 10% off. So you may want to get one when you buy your gear for CH-BOLC.
You will need to shape your beret. You can buy a preshaped beret, at another store.
Gel cushions for your boots are nice also.
You want your ACU's to be kinda baggy.
Get a watch too.
If you're near a military base you'll want to get a sticker for your car.
You will get a $600 stipend for uniforms when you get to chbolc. Which will pretty much cover your dress uniform.
You will need to buy a PT uniform. Grey short sleve shirt, army shorts, black, and a saftey belt reflector things. For CHbolc I recommend you buy like 10 sets. When it gets cold you will need the winter apfu.
Your unit will probably issue your TA-50 gear. Standard stuff, ruck, IABA, ACH mitch, and so on....you lose it you pay for it. HAHA, expensive stuff.
well, I think I'm done.
