CRESTVIEW, Fla. — Sheriff’s investigators say an Army paratrooper on leave from Iraq accidentally shot and killed himself while showing his family his new handgun.

Army Spc. Andrew Steven Faulkner, 21, died Friday in Crestview.

Investigators say he was showing his mother, aunt, young cousin and others a Glock .40 caliber handgun when he accidentally fired it into his chest while trying to remove the magazine from the weapon.

Faulkner had been on leave since November following a yearlong deployment with the 82nd Airborne Division to Iraq.

This is so sad. I know of several military members that have died while on leave or just returning from war. R.I.P. brother. My prayers go out to him and his family.

(lets make a gun safety a different topic and give this fallen warrior the respect and not threadjack)

Indeed, let it be so. When I read this my heart sank.

This also highlights the need for everyone around firearms to always handle them safely. Only point a firearm at something you want to shoot, even if it's unloaded. One of the saddest sentences in any language: "I didn't think it was loaded."

Your friendly local NRA (http://www.nra.org) can help in this regard. They have safety classes for owners and for non-owners (to include children).

Sorry to hear this happened. I can only imagine the life-long horrors his mother, aunt, and young cousin will remember seeing of him last.

RIP Soldier

Amen to that Sir. In Ohio to obtain a CCW license you have to take classes and gun safety is highly stressed. Something all gun owners should take.

My prayers go out to Spc. Faulkner's family.
