Why would the Army National Guard hire part time helicopter pilots when the Army could hire full time pilots and get far more bang for there buck. After all, training helicopter pilots is not cheap.

As a recruiter for the Vermont Army National Guard aviation unit, I can tell you that there is more "bang for your buck" by hiring a National Guard pilot. Yes, the training is expensive, but you don't have to pay a pilot full time pay if he or she only drills once a month. It is much more cost effective to pay a pilot part time and only pay them active duty pay when they are activated. The same principle applies to non-pilots in the National Guard.
