I believe I know the answer, but I'll ask anyway.

I'm 42 years old (turned 42 on 8/21), when I was 17 I joined the Army Reserve. I was discharged during 11b OSUT with a RE-3 JET (Trainee Discharge), which I know would require a waiver. I basically wasn't mature enough for what I commited to. My 214 shows 7 mo. of reserve time from drilling with my unit prior to OSUT and about 1.5 mo of active time. I'm in California.

Am I too old for the Guard?

Unfortunately the Army/NG keep raising the maximum age right after I've hit that age.

I contacted a recruiter and the age is 42. You have one year from your birthday to go in before you turn 43. I'm 41 and planning on joining this year after I get back into shape. I'm not sure about the other issues you had which you discharged early.

Good luck!

Can a recruiter give me an answer on this? I thought it was 42 as in not before your 42nd birthday or 41 yrs & 364 days.

Is that the limit & would my previous time (both active & reserve?) be subtracted from my current age? Waiver possible if not?

Ok here is the real deal, You have to join BEFORE your 42nd birthday, so if you are 42 already sorry you are to old. Also you have to ship out to basic BEFORE your 42nd birthday also, so that means, you can join and ship out by 41 years 364 days old, thats the cut off

You are correct. You need to leave for basic training before your 42nd birthday. No waivers are authorized beyond that.

SPC Tischner and SSG Fletcher, don't forget about the prior service time (approximately 8.5 months). Since as a prior service he can get a waiver for 1 year of qualifying service and his birthday was in August, he's got about 6.5months left if he's able to get the waiver right away.

You're right ABNMTN (once again) :)

Since his DD-214 shows 7 months of reserve time, he's considered Prior Service (not GNPS). He may be able to get a waiver, but he needs to get on the ball. Good call.

Thank you SFC Marrero, that is exactly the kind of "inside" info I was hoping to find. Thank you to everyone else that responded as well. Looks like I have a chance after all, I'll be contacting a local recruiter.
